3 Common Twitter Mistakes by Real Estate Agents - WPMU.org

Real Estate Phrases - Search Columns on TweetDeck

TweetDeck Screenshot - Search Columns for Real Estate Phrases

1) Automating Tweets

I am very opposed to using services like City Blast which offer a syndication feed of property listings and real estate news. Everybody syndicates the same stuff and it often includes a link that takes the Follower off Twitter to another site. Ever think that maybe they don?t want to leave Twitter?

This is not a conversation it?s a broadcast which sounds like a broken record and people see through it. While having current news and listings is valuable, it has it?s time and place?. on a dedicated listings page really. Too many realtors think of social media as another advertising portal instead of a 2nd phone number to stay in touch with clients.

If you?re going to use a service like City Blast it should not represent more than 10% of your tweets or it will not look like it is coming from you. As a realtor I?m sure you can appreciate the power of ?word of mouth? and that?s really what social media is? the key difference is that everybody is watching. One needs to be careful of what they put out there because it may look like you don?t really care.

2) Not Searching Other Tweets

Now this is one of the rare exceptions where I encourage automation. I use a program called TweetDeck?(made by Twitter)?and there are many more like Hootsuite. It allows me to set automated search operations (search columns). I?ll create a search column for any Tweet that includes the words ?Bought First House? and ?Sold Our House?? you can come up with many more like ?Finally moved in? or ?My new condo?. If you load these all up you?ll start seeing a trend, you see emotions? you see real people celebrating or cursing the triumphs and woes of real estate.

If you look at my screenshot up top (TweetDeck Screenshot) ?you?ll see a number of tweets are worth re-tweeting ?RT? and when done with consistency can start inspiring people who follow you to make a move themselves. You should also follow all your clients and partners? comment on some of their tweets, ask them questions and RT their tweets. Imagine the vibe you could create on your profile if it was covered with RT from real people saying these things?

Make it your goal to involve someone who has their own Twitter account in all of your Tweets. Bet you can?t automate that now can you? Don?t fret, you can schedule your Tweets with TweetDeck so that you can do 5 or 6 of them quickly without actually blasting everyone with all of them in one shot. Remember to space them out if you?re going for inspirational quotes (RT phrases like the ones in my screenshot).

3) Not Taking Ownership

When I say ownership I mean pride, I mean confidence and comfort. Don?t be afraid to be yourself? show your Followers you are human, admit it you?ve had a long day? ask your followers to bring you up to speed on everything you?ve missed. Wondering if it?s raining across town? Tweet it? you?d be surprised at how fast you can get an answer.

Get a Twitter App on your mobile phone and enable email notifications within your Twitter Account settings so that you know when to login and respond to someone asap. Remember, 80% of social media is done on mobile phones sharing pictures and straight old fashioned talking. Ok old fashioned is dead, we now type with our telephones but you know what I mean.

Make Twitter your 2nd phone number, show interest in what others are talking about, voice your opinion and jump into the conversation? it?s one big party and everybody is welcome to it? that?s the beauty of social media. It?s now fast becoming the #1 way consumers complain about products and services.

You can take that as a blessing or a threat. If you ignore it? it?s most definitely a threat? but if you respond to it, you can turn it around in public view and that?s what people will never forget and keep talking about. Be a journalist, be a friend, be honest and above all be consistent. Happy Tweeting!

Emma Stone The Amazing Spider Man Press Conference In Rome Wallpaper - #63763

Review: 'The Amazing Spider-Man' Is A Good Teen Romance Struggling To Escape A Mediocre Superhero Movie

We're likely reaching something of a tipping point with the superhero movies. The first wave is ending: "X-Men" has already been reinvented, Superman is getting his second relaunch in a decade, "The Hulk" has already had its third iteration, and Christopher Nolan's Batman-trilogy, which more than anything else brought a new level of respectability to the genre, is coming to a close. We're entering the second phase of the modern superhero movie era, and it's leading to some interesting possibilities. So far, these films have essentially been a genre in and of themselves, but as new filmmakers inevitably try out fresh ideas within its confines, we're likely to see other styles brought into the mix.

And that's where Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man" comes into play, as it's arguably the first comic book movie not targeted principally at the comic book crowd. Indeed, as a comic book movie, it's pretty terrible. But as a film involving relationships between human beings -- arguably the first in the genre -- it's something of a success, just unfortunately not an unequivocal one.

For the most part, the plot won't be a surprise for anyone who saw the Sam Raimi incarnations, or is familiar with the character from comics, Saturday morning cartoons or general cultural osmosis, albeit with a few tweaks and twists that hint at the filmmakers trying to reconfigure the origin story slightly, again, to keep things fresh. Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is an orphan, raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field), although in Webb's version (penned by James Vanderbilt, Allen Sargent and Steve Kloves), his parents, one of them a noted scientist (Campbell Scott and Embeth Davidtz) mysteriously run off in the middle of the night, fleeing some threat, before perishing in a plane crash. As a high-schooler, Parker is awkward and isolated, nursing a crush on classmate Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and generally trying to do the right thing. A discovery of an old briefcase leads him to his father's old employers at Oscorp (where Gwen conveniently happens to intern), and to old family friend Dr. Curtis Connors (Rhys Ifans), a one-armed scientist working on cross-species genetics, partly in the hope that lizard DNA might help him grow back his missing limb. Their connection, and Parker's unexpected, in-the-genes scientific genius, leads to two things: 1) Peter being bitten by a spider that gives him extraordinary powers (strength, agility, being able to stick to things) and 2) Connors, pressured by Oscorp higher-up Rajit Ratha (Irrfan Khan), testing his serum on himself, which turns him into a creature known to fans as The Lizard.

No major story ground being broken then, as such. And that's doubly disappointing given that there is an awful lot wrong with the film. For one, despite the three credited writers, it bears the unmistakable mark of serious post-production alterations with a number of botched threads and giant plot-holes throughout. The much-hyped "secret origin" plotline, for instance, seems to have been severely truncated, for one, dropped by the end of the first act. One particular Peter Parker-led quest for retribution is similarly forgotten about quite swiftly as well. And Khan's character entirely disappears from the film after only a couple of scenes -- although he's lucky compared to Annie Parisse, cast as Connors' wife Martha, and cut from the film altogether (there's more along similar lines we could talk about, but we don't want to head too heavily into spoiler territory). It's possible to perform this kind of triage effortlessly, but that's not the case here -- much of these elements feel unsatisfying, like unfinished business, and not in a chomping-at-the-bit for a sequel kind of way. Suspension of disbelief (SOD) issues are also a major problem throughout. Peter Parker seems to be fairly bright, just like his dad (we're shown some nifty gadgets he's made at home to remotely lock his bedroom), but when suddenly he's making web-shooters MacGyver style at home, that logic just doesn't parse. Likewise, when Parker's webshooters are first made, instead of taking them for a safe test-drive, the teenager -- who up until this point has evinced no impressions of having a death wish -- jumps off a building and swings to safety, with only a few dining tables outside of Manhattan any worse for wear. And while the film clearly takes place in present day, all the technology at Oscorp appears as it if it's from the far future of "Prometheus." Small issues, sure, but SOD problems add up, and you can only be knocked out of the movie's flow so many times before it starts to grate.

And the more comic-book/blockbuster stuff also generally falls flat here. Webb seemingly gains confidence as the film goes on, but early action sequences are choppy and thrill-free, and even the later ones mostly feel uninspired and airless, thanks to being quite CGI-heavy. Perhaps most importantly, The Lizard is a weak antagonist on every front. The design work for the transformed creature (even down to the sound) is lackluster, the character is both undefined and somewhat cliched (tragic backstory via Doctor Octopus in "Spider-Man 2," virtually motiveless evil scheme via the first "X-Men") and Ifans' performance is flat and uninspired -- it would have been far more fun if he'd simply replicated his cheeky "Five-Year Engagement" performance. Oh, and the 3D, one admittedly impressive sequence aside, is murky and not especially well executed. It's no wonder that Marvel geeks are already lining up against the film.

And yet, in more old-fashioned ways, "The Amazing Spider-Man" is quite engaging. Some could criticize the film for retreading the origin story again, but for this writer, it didn't jar, simply because Webb gives that first act the space and time to really establish the characters and relationships (and some will argue this stretch affects pacing). And Ifans aside, he's cast the hell out of it. Garfield is, as many expected, pretty close to being definitive, but what's interesting is that he gives new, unexpected texture to the role; this is Peter Parker as a moody and irritable teenager, acting out, being disapproved of, and finding a little bit of a thrill in keeping his newly-discovered-powers secret, even while clearly being an incredibly good-hearted kid. And yet it never becomes too angsty, because Garfield brings enough humor and awkwardness to the part that it stops him from becoming emo-Spidey. Oh, and he's about a million times sexier than Tobey Maguire ever was. This isn't Peter Parker as a stereotyped nerd, it's a teenage boy whose tragic past has stopped him from ever truly connecting and engaging with people, and that feels like a fresh take on the character that genuinely makes sense for a modern audience.

And then there's Emma Stone. The film could perhaps use more of her, but then we'd argue that "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" would probably be improved with a little more Emma Stone too; she's as sparky and funny as she usually is, but also gives the character real psychological depth, and the chemistry with Garfield (the two became a couple on set) is a more impressive special effect than any number of collapsing CGI skyscrapers. Martin Sheen and Sally Field, as Parker's adoptive parents, are also excellent, turning the characters into real people rather than walking targets or manifestations of Peter's conscience. And Denis Leary, as Gwen's cop father, a surprisingly prominent role, is impressive too, giving a potentially one-dimensional part real gravitas, pathos, and a little humor too.

And the film's real pleasures are in the way these actors play off each other, not in the CGI-aided punch ups. Webb wisely gives them room to breathe (indeed, you feel frustrated when things turn back to The Lizard's schemes), and for perhaps the first time in superhero movie history, the central characters don't feel like they're lifted from comics, it feels like they're actual human beings. And while the script suffers from several plot contrivances, many of them due to comic book lore or time constraints, its a great triumph is that its characters mostly behave like people, rather than pawns of a storyline, thanks in particular to some smart reversals of expectation (again, we won't spoil them, but there's one involving Gwen near the end that made our heart sing a little). Even school bully Flash Thompson (Chris Zylka) is more interesting than he lets on. Part of the issue is that "The Amazing Spider-Man" is at odds with itself. Webb shows an incredible affinity for characters and emotion (the reason he was hired in the first place), but much of that tone feels like it's flipping channels when we're back in action-y Spider-Man mode. Likewise, the film has a dark, brooding tone (though again, not as angsty as it might appear on the surface) that wants to be dark and realistic, yet its realism is only rooted in character, while all the science and technology is rooted in hooey and fantasy that doesn't jibe. Also in contrast to that is tone. It's a fairly serious film with some comedic elements that turn on the more traditional, goofy Spider-Man vibe (the one that Sam Raimi nailed so well), like when Stan Lee does his mandatory cameo, or when Peter Parker puts on his suit and starts firing off, what feel like prerequisite, but not earned, Spidey quips.

Ultimately, we'll take a film like this, where you care about the characters, over one that gets the spectacle right but not much else; taking the time to ground people properly just about serves as a justification for going back and telling the origin again. There's a lot wrong with the film, undeniably --- it often feels like a good romantic drama (or dramatic rom-com) struggling to get out from under a poor superhero flick. But there's also enough here to make it a fairly pleasurable watch (it was greeted with a warm round of applause at the end of our screening), and enough to make us confident that, with a more focused script, and a threat that ties into the protagonist more, the next time around could be something much more special. Pirlo puts in crafty performance against Germany

By FRANK GRIFFITHS

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:48 p.m. ET June 28, 2012

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -Andrea Pirlo twirled around defenders effortlessly, and even cleared a ball off the line. On both sides of the field, it was Pirlo that provided the inspiration.

The Italy playmaker didn't score, but he still helped Italy beat Germany 2-1 Thursday in the European Championship semifinals and set up a match against Spain on Sunday in Kiev.

Although he was named man of the match, Pirlo preferred to credit his teammates.

"The team was fantastic," Pirlo said. "We had a great win against a terrific side. We really hope to win the final and put in a terrific display in Kiev."

For the 33-year-old Pirlo, it was the second straight match for which he won plaudits for his incisive passing and flair in midfield. He controlled the pace against Germany and in the quarterfinals against England on Sunday. He sealed that performance with a superb chip in the penalty shootout.

On Thursday, it was Pirlo's defending that was needed early on in the match. He was glued to the goal line when Germany center back Mats Hummels' header seemed to be heading in. The ball hit Pirlo square in the chest and he cleared it off the line for Italy.

It was a crucial intervention, because the Germans had the better chances in the opening stages and going down a goal would have been a huge setback for the Italians.

Pirlo then commanded the tempo of the match, winning midfield duels and impressing the crowd at the National Stadium. A big cheer went up when Pirlo evaded a marker in the center circle with a backheel flick and then spun around to collect the ball again.

Most midfielders are already in decline at Pirlo's age, but the Italian appears to still be in his prime. He led Juventus to an undefeated Serie A season and the Italian title last month, a year after AC Milan gave up on him. He is among just four remaining members of the squad that won the 2006 World Cup.

"I've always given my best," Pirlo said. "Now that we're here in this final we've got to enjoy this to the fullest. But I'm not celebrating too much yet, because we still haven't done anything.

"We want to return home with the cup."

Liberty Lake Golf Tournament will support "Women & Children's Free Restaurant" in Spokane

The Women &Children's free restaurant and Community Kitchen is a vital safety net that fills nutritional gaps for women and children in need across our area. The key component is the WCFR provides service with dignity and respect both within the community and kitchen.

This mission statement is one the of the many good reasons The Washington Association of Landscapers decided to make the Women & Children's Free Restaurant the beneficicary of their golf tournament. I recently had a chance to talk with one of the chairs of the tournament, Derek Collett ,to find out why he's so passionate about this charity.

Q: Tell me your roll in the charity golf tournament?

A: Myself and Micah Leavitt are co-chairs of the WALP/WCFR Charity Golf Classic. Ourselves plus other committee members of Washington Association of Landscape professionals have worked to put together the team format, acquiring donation/auction items, and marketing of the event!

Q: How did you guys choose the WCFR?

A: We researched to find a 100% local charity with all proceeds to stay within the community. Through our research WCFR stood out. Because of their dedication to families in need we thought it was the perfect fit for what WALP wanted to do within the Spokane community.

Q: How can someone help WCFR if they may not want to golf?

A: We need donations for auction items. Donations can be a form of a product or service. All funds from the auction will be donated 100% to the WCFR. As a member of the community people can volunteer at the WCFR. Get on the website or give them a call.

Q: Are all the proceeds tax deductable?

A: All donations whether they are cash, product, or services are tax deductible. The WCFR are a non profit organization and you can contact me for the tax information.

Q: How can people get signed up for golf and and contribute to the auction?

A: People can contact me through phone or email for the sign up sheets for golf and auction items. Derek@wheatinsurance.com or phone 991-4293.

Q: Tell us where it's going to be and little bit about the golf course?

A: This year the tournament will be held at the Liberty Lake Golf course. You get so many people that want to get involved with the golf tournament, and with this comes all skill levels. Liberty Lake is a fun course that can be enjoyable for all of the different players.

Q: How is the auction going to be set up, will there be a dinner with a silent and live auction?

A: There will be a dinner and silent auction held at the golf course. Auction items will be on display from Noon until 4 pm. Bids will close at 4 pm and the winners will be announced throughout the dinner ceremony.

Q: Tell me anything else you'd like people to know about this event.

A: WALP (Washington Association of Landscape Professionals) is committed to our community. Through charity events and donating our time and skills with community projects. We are licensed professionals dedicated to excellence in the work we provide and our community. That is why we wanted to partner with the WCFR. The WCFR serves nearly 38,000 meals each year. They offer in-house meals where a mother and her kids can come in and be seated and waited on in the restaurant. They also have a fresh market program that families in need are able to come to so that they can provide the kids with well balanced meals. Not only does the WCFR provide in-house meals, but they also regularly provide meals for Hope House, St. Margaret?s Shelter, Crosswalk and feed Cheney. They are also asked to help provide one time meals for special events. These requests come from Lutheran Community Services, SNAP, My Sisters Temple and the Breakfasts for the Homeless. WCFR is entrenched with our Spokane community and making a difference in it.

Rights group says Apple suppliers in China breaking labor laws

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Apple Inc's suppliers in China have violated local labor laws when they imposed excessive overtime and skimped on insurance, a New York-based labor rights group said.

Apple and its suppliers such as Taiwanese tycoon Terry Gou's Foxconn Technology Group have been the target of labor rights groups, which say the world's most valuable technology company are making iPhones and iPads in massive sweat shops.

"From our investigations we found that the labor rights violations at Foxconn also exist in virtually all other Apple supplier factories, and in many cases, are actually significantly more dire than at Foxconn," China Labor Watch said in a 133-page report released on Thursday.

A four-month investigation through April showed workers work up to 180 hours of overtime a month during peak periods, exceeding the legal limit of 36 hours per month, the group said, citing Riteng, a unit of Taiwan's Pegatron Corp, as an example.

Some factories also omit medical insurance as required by the law while workers are exposed to hazardous conditions, according to the report.

China Labor Watch interviewed 620 workers at 10 factories run by Apple suppliers, including Toyo Precision Appliance and BYD Electronic (International) Co.

The group also spoke with workers at factories run by units of Quanta Computer Inc, Wintek Corp and U.S.-listed Jabil Circuit Inc.

The companies couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

"As part of our ongoing supplier responsibility program, our team has conducted thorough audits at every facility in China Labor Watch's report," Kristin Huguet, an Apple spokeswoman based in Cupertino, California, said in an e-mail.

"In some places, our auditors found issues similar to those described by China Labor Watch, including overtime violations," she said, when asked to comment on the report.

DISMAL CONDITIONS

The report singled out Riteng for dismal work conditions, saying workers work almost 12 hours a day, longer than 10 hours a day at Foxconn, Apple's main supplier.

Half of Riteng's workers described safety conditions as "bad," more than Foxconn's 2 percent, according to the report.

The average hourly wage at Riteng is 8.2 yuan ($1.29), well below the average rate 10.2 yuan at Foxconn.

The Pegatron unit was not immediately available for comment.

Labor groups say wages have generally been on the rise, though the growth has been slower than inflation.

"Wages are certainly going up, but they are still a very long way from what you consider a decent wage because inflation in the major cities in southern China is going up all the time," said Geoffrey Crothall of China Labor Bulletin.

"It's generally better at the larger factories, but the problem with Foxconn and a lot of the other Taiwanese, Hong Kong-owned manufacturers, the management culture there is still very authoritarian, quite dictatorial. People say it's quasi-military."

James Wu, a spokesman for Catcher Technology Co, which was also mentioned in the report, said the proportion of short-term labor it employs without having to provide severance compensation was actually lower than that described by China Labor Watch.

"Our dispatch rate is 20-30 percent, lower than the rate of around 80 percent mentioned in the report," Wu said.

Catcher also put their workers through a three-day training program to prepare them for their jobs.

"In summary, our company provides benefits for workers that exceed basic requirements," Wu said.

MAKING CHECKS

Apple said it had been making checks at its supply chain partners and regularly publishes reports on workers' situation on its website (http://www.apple.com/supplierresponsibility/).

The company, which monitors worker hours of more than 700,000 workers in its supply chain, said it had been following up to make sure suppliers comply with its labor standards.

Workers typically have little legal representation in China, where labor laws are sometimes not strictly enforced. Unions are also often not effective in providing feedback to management, labor rights groups said.

Following a spate of critical reports detailing unsafe factory practices at Foxconn plants that triggered worker deaths and suicides, Apple this year allowed the U.S.-based Fair Labor Association (FLA) to conduct a high-profile probe of Foxconn's factories in China.

"The process of change in our company continues, and competitive wages, improved living conditions and the abolition of the use of dispatched workers by our company are some examples of this," Foxconn said in an e-mailed statement.

"Our considerable investment in this process will change our industry through the positive example we are setting for other companies." ($1 = 6.3554 Chinese yuan)

AP source: Talks fail to resolve contempt issue

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Obama administration officials and House Republican staff members Tuesday failed to resolve a document dispute that could lead to a precedent-setting contempt of Congress vote Thursday against Attorney General Eric Holder.

A House Republican official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name, said White House and Justice Department representatives met and showed the GOP staff less than 30 pages of documents related to the aftermath of the botched gun-tracking operation known as Fast and Furious.

The GOP official said the administration also promised to provide hundreds of pages of documents, but only if House Republicans would stop the contempt effort and end their investigation. A House committee is looking into administration actions taken after the administration provided inaccurate information to Congress on the gun-tracking operation.

The Justice Department has said the offer of more documents ? originally made last week ? was only an attempt to avoid contempt, not to shut down the investigation.

The GOP official said the latest document offer was rejected and no further meetings were scheduled.

"The documents that were shown today did not shed any meaningful new light on the questions and interactions that took place at the Justice Department" after whistle-blowers told Congress that Fast and Furious allowed guns bought in Arizona to "walk" into Mexico, the GOP official said.

Those attending the meeting included White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, legislative director Rob Nabors, Justice Department official Steven Reich and representatives of House Speaker John Boehner and Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

President Barack Obama has asserted a broad version of executive privilege to keep Justice Department documents secret. The GOP official said the House staff members asked for a log of documents that would be withheld, but the administration officials refused.

The White House has declined to comment.

Now that the politically potent National Rifle Association is keeping score, some Democrats are expected to join House Republicans in supporting the contempt of Congress vote against Holder.

One of those Democrats, Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah, said, "Sadly, it seems that it will take holding the attorney general in contempt to communicate that evasiveness is unacceptable. It is a vote I will support."

The gun owners association injected itself last week into the stalemate over Justice Department documents demanded by the House Oversight Committee. The NRA said it supports the contempt resolution and will keep a record of how members vote.

An NRA letter to House members contended that the Obama administration "actively sought information" from Operation Fast and Furious to support its program to require dealers to report multiple rifle sales.

The program, which began last August, imposed the requirement for sales of specifically identified long guns in four border states: Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico. A federal judge upheld the requirement.

Republicans want Holder to become the first attorney general to be cited by the House for contempt because he has refused to give the Oversight Committee all the documents it wants related to Operation Fast and Furious.

Unless a last-minute deal is worked out, always a possibility in Congress, the contempt vote Thursday would be the same day the Supreme Court is to announce its ruling on the legality of the nation's health care law.

A vote to hold Holder in contempt of Congress wouldn't send any documents to the Oversight Committee.

Obama invoked what is known as "deliberative process privilege," a claim designed to broadly cover executive branch documents. However Issa, in a letter to the president, said Obama was misusing the narrower "presidential communications privilege," which is reserved for documents to and from the president and his most senior advisers.

White House Spokesman Eric Schultz said Tuesday that Issa's analysis "has as much merit as his absurd contention that Operation Fast and Furious was created in order to promote gun control. Our position is consistent with executive branch legal precedent for the past three decades spanning administrations of both parties."

Ironically, the documents at the heart of the current argument are not directly related to the workings of Operation Fast and Furious, which allowed guns to "walk" from Arizona to Mexico in hopes they could be tracked. The department has given Issa 7,600 documents on the operation.

Rather, Issa wants internal communications from February 2011, when the administration denied knowledge of gun-walking, to the end of that year, when officials acknowledged the denial was erroneous. Those documents covered a period after Fast and Furious had been shut down.

In Fast and Furious, agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Arizona abandoned the agency's usual practice of intercepting all weapons they believed to be illicitly purchased. Instead, the goal of gun-walking was to track such weapons to high-level arms traffickers who long had eluded prosecution and to dismantle their networks.

Gun-walking long has been barred by Justice Department policy, but federal agents in Arizona experimented with it in at least two investigations during the George W. Bush administration before Fast and Furious.

The agents in Arizona lost track of several hundred weapons in Operation Fast and Furious. The low point of the operation came in Arizona in 2010, when U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed in a firefight with a group of armed Mexican bandits and two guns traced to the operation were found at the scene.

Making the Most of Fatherhood | MemphisConnect

Hall of Fame baseball player Harmon Killebrew told a story about how his father kept his eye on the ball when it came to raising his children. ?My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard,? Killebrew said. ?Mother would come out and say, ?You?re tearing up the grass.? ?We?re not raising grass,? Dad would reply. ?We?re raising boys.??

And so it is. Since we?ve just celebrated Father?s Day, it?s worth remembering that there is nothing that we do in our lives more important and more fulfilling than raising children that are healthy ? physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. When we do it right, we touch the future, because secure, nurtured, disciplined, and confident children have their best chances to become successful later in life and as they become parents themselves.

At a time when child-rearing is hard even in families where both parents are present, almost half (47%) of the families in our community with children under 18 have no husband present. It?s a fact of life that creates additional risks for so many children in Memphis and Shelby County.

We?re not saying that single parents can?t succeed. In fact, it?s inspirational that so many do in the face of difficult hardships and almost insurmountable obstacles. That said, we know from research that single parent households and poverty too often go hand-in-hand, resulting in less than optimal brain development for children whose brains grow to 80% of their adult sizes before their third birthdays.

We?re also not saying that a father in the house is a magic bullet. The only magic is in a father who takes his responsibilities seriously and who is committed to being a positive presence in his children?s lives. As the aphorism says, any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.

In recent years, the results of research have shifted from the presence of a father to the sensitivity of a father. Rather than the just the quantity of time spent with their children, it?s about the quality of the time that fathers spend with their children.

Fathers matter. And yet, a large percentage of them are not involved or engaged in the social and academic development of their children. One in every three children in the U.S. live in a father-absent home and that percentage is much higher in our community. The consequences for our city and our nation are profound, because without the benefits received by children from positive fathers or father figures, risks for school dropout, substance abuse, aggressiveness, and teen pregnancy increase.

So, take a few minutes to answer these questions to determine if you are doing your best to be a positive influence in the first three years of your child?s life:

  • Have you visited your child?s school or child care center? When was the last time you met with your child?s teacher?
  • When was the last time you read your child a story? Did you ask your child questions about the characters and the plot?
  • When was the last time you helped your child with his homework?
  • When was the last time you praised your child and hugged her?
  • Do you get on the floor and play with your child in activities that build a strong relationship?
  • When was the last time you took your child ? just the two of you ? to a park or the zoo?
  • Can you find a hobby, craft, or activity that you can share with your child?
  • Do you fully co-parent with your wife/child?s mother?
  • Are you a strong role model for how to deal with conflict and do you eliminate toxic stress from your child?s life?
  • Do you teach your child new words and engage in conversations with him?
  • Do you accept that your child isn?t exactly like you?
  • Do you allow your child to make some mistakes?
  • Do you show unconditional love?
  • Most of all, do you lead by example?

In case you?re not sure about the return on this investment, just consider that involved fathers strengthen early development of their children by building better problem-solving skills; by encouraging them to keep trying when facing a new challenge; by dealing with every day frustrations, by making them feel secure enough to explore the world around them; by developing greater confidence, and by making them 75% less likely to be a teen parent and 80% less likely to spend time in jail.

In support of strong fathers, we are sponsoring Fatherhood Friday at the Memphis Zoo on June 29 and Mayor Wharton?s training camp for dads on Saturday, June 30. Register for the training camp here. In addition, we are sponsoring and will have a table with information at the Ultimate Family Reunion at Levitt Shell at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 23. The Reunion is hosted by Soul Classics 103.5 and will have live performances from ?your favorite Old School artists,? food, and prizes. Learn more about these events here.

Finally, here?s our list of ?10 Things Every Child Should Experience Before Kindergarten.? We hope you?ll put all ten on your to-do list and join us this month as we celebrate the power of fathers and the way they transform young live

A Look at Gaming Today | BRIDGE Technical Solutions' Blog

Games

It?s been about seven years since we entered the 7th era of gaming consoles, and at this point we?re left with a debate about which system ranks the very best amongst the big three: PlayStation, Wii and Xbox. Be sure that everyone has his or her own opinions on this matter. In a little over half a decade, we?ve seen not only the evolution of the current consoles but also of the gaming industry itself. What was traditionally nothing but a pure gaming machine has been completely revamped to become an entertainment hub for the home. The State of Gaming World was last week in Los Angeles at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, and in addition to announcing all of the new games available this year, E3 2012 showed a glimpse of where video games are heading in the coming years.

Nintendo was first to release a console that began the current generation ? the Nintendo Wii. If you didn?t grown up with a Nintendo system, you know someone who did. Nintendo has dominated the gaming industry for decades, especially from the perspective of a younger audience. As Nintendo moves forward to the next installment of the Wii, the Wii U will continue to break ground in a broader market that targets the casual gamer. The key element here is motion control. Whether Nintendo would have the user interact in the digital world with a motion controller or with the newly announced GamePad, Nintendo is looking for ways to innovate and show the world how truly unique they are.

When asked which of their competitors they feared the most, PlayStation or Xbox, Nintendo replied Apple, an answer that came straight out of left field, as I don?t think anyone even had Apple on their radar. After pondering their response a bit, though, it does make a lot of sense. For example, the Angry Bird fever completely overcame this country, and? Wal-mart sells all sorts of merchandise inspired by the sling-shot mobile game. It?s absolutely crazy that such a simple game about nothing could grow into a million dollar business. Nintendo knows how profitable the mobile gaming market is, which is why they?re adding more components to their family friendly environment.? With the GamePad, Nintendo hopes gamers will enjoy playing Wii U using an extra screen, interacting with friends or surfing the Web while playing a game on the television. ?There is also a remote play feature for when the television is already in use.

PlayStation has been one of the must-have media systems since the PS3 was launched. ?Not only is it a top pick for most gamers, but the ability to watch movies on Blu-Ray and via streaming sites such as Netflix and Hulu made owning this piece of hardware a no-brainer.

One promising asset of PlayStation is its portable gaming device. The PS Vita completely blows Nintendo?s 3DS out of the water in hardware specifications. Nintendo?s software is no match either. One feature that could truly move PlayStation to higher places is the remote play feature across Wi-Fi and 3G networks. With this feature, you can remotely play your PS3 games on-the-go no matter where you are in the world. Today, there?s no bigger reason to go with the PlayStation 3 than this functionality.

Xbox is the only gaming console that requires users to have a paid subscription in order to play games online, yet it enjoys the largest community of gamers and currently ranks first in 2012 sales. Xbox is also the system of choice for pro-gamers. Microsoft not only has a huge stake in the console wars but is also a major player in the PC gaming world. The most competitive PC game in the world is Star Craft II, and all of the pro-gamers use Windows. Despite PlayStation being their biggest competitor in the gaming market, allowing its users to play online for free, Xbox has done very well for itself.

Xbox has come a long way since it first was unveiled in May 2005. ?It never had Blu-ray capabilities, and it didn?t even have Wi-Fi. ?Now, with the Xbox Kinect, there?s no need for motion controllers ? your physical self is the controller. ?Sales for dancing and fitness games have dramatically shifted from the Wii to the Xbox 360. ?One question remains for me: ?how will Apple respond to Xbox?s newly announced SmartGlass, the features of which are almost directly copied and pasted from Apple?s TV?

Apple, believe it or not, is a fourth major player when comparing the top gaming companies. They?re the only one without their own console, but they?ve shown there?s a new way to be very profitable in this industry ? the App Store, which has many games available that are very cheap, very simple and very addictive.

What Apple has brought into the home is Apple TV and AirPlay, giving users the ability to stream their content seamlessly into their televisions. ?AirPlay is an excellent way to play PS3- and Xbox 360-type games on your iOS and Android phones and tablets.? There is no longer a need for discs because everything is registered in the cloud.

With the Wii U and its GamePad, with Xbox 360 and its SmartGlass, it will be interesting to see what Apple does next, and if they truly intend to become more competitive in the gaming industry. ?Apple TV and AirPlay does an excellent job of streaming content from mobile devices to the television, delivering other streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, and running sports apps. ?I?m guessing that the main reason the gaming aspect of Apple hasn?t gone truly viral is because app developers haven?t integrated physical controller capabilities into their games and devices.

Next year will hold one of the more exciting E3 conferences in a long time because it is widely believed that the successors of both the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be announced. ?The best thing to do is stay tuned, using whichever device suits you most.? Which one is for you?

(AP) ? Five-time champion Venus Williams lost in the opening round of Wimbledon for the first time since 1997, falling 6-1, 6-3 to Elena Vesnina of Russia on Monday.

Williams had lost in the second round at the French Open, her first Grand Slam action since Aug. 29, 2011, at the U.S. Open; two days later, she pulled out of her second-round match at that tournament, revealing that she'd been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

The unseeded Williams lost the first five games Monday. She put up more of a fight in the second set but was broken in the sixth game when she missed a forehand. Vesnina clinched the match with a service winner.

Williams was making her 16th straight appearance at Wimbledon and had not lost in the first round since her debut.

Here is another favorite ingredient of mine, L-Glutamine. This particular product comes from ISS Research and also belongs to my Recommended Supplements list. Unfortunately as of the writing of this review ISS Research has discontinued the product. So, like a few other products on this site this product contains only one ingredient.

So, because this product is discontinued I will not be reviewing it, but rather providing a link to an article on I?llPumpYouUp.com where they provide an excellent article on the many benefits of L-Glutamine. Here is a link to the article titled, ?Glutamine the Forgotten Hero!? ? http://www.illpumpyouup.com/articles/glutamine-the-forgotten-hero.htm. If I were to review this product I would have given it a 10/10 based on quality and price.

Katy Perry: I Cried Over Russell Brand While on Tour

When Katy Perry's upcoming concert documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me hits theaters July 5, fans are going to get a lot more than a behind-the-scenes look at the makings of the singer's 124-day-long California Dreams world tour. The movie was shot at the same time that the 27-year-old's marriage to soon-to-be-ex-husband Russell Brand was crumbling, and, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Perry admits to struggling with how to present the breakup on the big screen. Ultimately she simply stayed true to herself.
