Intel Announces New Mobile Chipsets for Budget Consumers

Intel?s attempt to break into the mobile game seems to be somewhat successful with both Motorola and Lenovo committed to bring at least one phone to the market with their technology, but Intel?s not going to stop with one chipset.

First up is the dual-core Intel Atom Z2580. Alongside the added core (a step up from the Atom Z2460), they?ve also bumped the GPU from a PowerVR SGX540 to a PowerVR SGX544MP2. The second chipset can be described as a weaker version of the Z2460.

It?s the Atom Z2000 with a 1GHz single-core processor and a 320MHz GPU. The Atom Z2000 is said to be headed for phones which will cost only $150 off contract. While it remains to be seen whether or not it?ll pack a lot of punch for its cost, I?m sure those who are buying $150 off-contract phones won?t expect much to begin with.

The worst thing is that these won?t be in commercially available devices util 2013. Yep, while Intel is introducing their first dual-core in 2013, we?ll probably see TI, Samsung and Qualcomm join NVIDIA on the quad-core train right around that same time. Read on for full press details.

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona, Spain, Feb. 27, 2012 - Intel Corporation President and CEO Paul Otellini today detailed a number of announcements and plans aimed at expanding the company?s smartphone product portfolio and customer ecosystem, including strategic new engagements with Orange*, Lava International Ltd.*, ZTE*, and Visa*.

?We are very pleased to add new, important customers and capabilities to our phone offerings today. We remain focused on delivering exciting new features and outstanding performance to smartphone customers around the world.? said Otellini.

Otellini made the announcements during an Intel news conference at Mobile World Congress. He also highlighted the company?s plans to expand its smartphone SoC and communications product roadmaps for the performance and value smartphone market segments.

New Smartphone Customer Engagements

Building on strategic engagements with?Motorola Mobility Inc.* and?Lenovo*, Intel detailed new device relationships with Orange, Lava International Ltd. and ZTE.

Yves Maitre, Orange senior vice president of Mobile Multimedia and Devices, joined Otellini to?discuss?a new Orange smartphone based on the Intel??Atom? processor Z2460?reference design. Housed in a sleek body, the design enables rich entertainment experiences and Orange services, including Orange TV, Daily Motion, Deezer, Orange Wednesdays and Orange Gestures. The Orange smartphone will be available in the United Kingdom and France later this summer.

Intel also announced plans to enter the high-growth market for smartphones in India through an alliance with Lava International Ltd., one of the fastest-growing Indian mobile handset companies.Vishal Sehgal, Lava co-founder and board director, announced the launch of?XOLO Smartphone by Lava. The XOLO X900 is based on Intel?s smartphone reference design and will be the first Intel technology-based smartphone in the India market. The device will be available from top retail outlets early in the second quarter of 2012 and will support major Indian cellular networks.

Similar to its previously announced partnership with Motorola Mobility, Intel also announced a multi-year mobile device collaboration across smartphones and tablets with global handset maker ZTE. Mr. He Shiyou, executive vice president and head of the Terminal Division of ZTE, discussed how his company?s alliance with Intel will enable ZTE to move faster and create unique and differentiated products for wireless operators. He also announced that ZTE?s first Intel-powered mobile device is scheduled to debut in the second half of 2012.

Expanding Smartphone SoC and Communications Roadmaps

Building on its ecosystem engagements, Intel announced plans for three new smartphone SoC products that expand the company?s portfolio from the performance-to-value market segments.

Extending the leading performance and energy efficiency of the?Intel? Atom? processor Z2460,?formerly codenamed ?Medfield,? Intel announced that the platform will now support speeds up to 2GHz.

?

Intel also announced the Atom? Z2580 processor that doubles the performance of the Atom processor Z2460, and features an advanced multimode LTE/3G/2G solution. Intel will sample the Z2580 in the second half of the year with customer products scheduled in the first half of 2013.

Addressing the growing handset opportunity in emerging markets where consumers look for more value at lower prices, Intel disclosed plans for the Intel? Atom? processor Z2000.

?

The Z2000 is aimed squarely at the value smartphone market segment, which industry sources predict could reach up to 500 million units by 2015¹.The platform includes a 1.0 GHz Atom CPU offering great graphics and video performance, and the ability to access the Web and play Google Android* games. It also supports the Intel? XMM 6265 3G HSPA+ modem with Dual-SIM 2G/3G, offering flexibility on data/voice calling plans to save on costs. Intel will sample the Z2000 in mid-2012 with customer products scheduled by early 2013.

Building on these 32nm announcements, Otellini discussed how the Atom? processor will outpace?Moore?s Lawand announced that Intel will ship 22nm SoCs for carrier certification next year, and is already in development on 14nm SoC technology.

In 2011, Intel shipped in more than 400 million cellular platforms. Building on this market segment position, Intel announced the?XMM 7160, an advanced multimode LTE/3G/2G platform with support for 100Mbps downlink and 50Mbps uplink, and support for HSPA+ 42Mbps. Intel will sample the product in the second quarter with customer designs scheduled to launch by the end of 2012.

Intel also announced that it is sampling the?XMM 6360 platform, a new slim modem 3G HSPA+ solution supporting 42Mbps downlink and 11.5Mbps uplink for small form factors.

Building Better Experiences on Intel Architecture

Intel?s strategy is to create and enable engaging, consistent, aware and secure user experiences across a range of mobile devices.

An emerging trend is the use of mobile devices to enable secure online and retail commerce. Otellini welcomed John Partridge, President, Visa Inc., who announced a?strategic multi-year alliance?to develop mobile commerce solutions tailored to consumers in developed and developing countries.

The effort includes collaboration across a range of Visa mobile services and Intel? Atom?-based smartphones and tablets to deliver compelling and secure user services. As a first step, Partridge announced that Intel?s smartphone reference design is now certified for?Visa payWave* mobile financial transactions. This means that customer products based on Intel?s smartphone reference design will have time-to-market support of Visa mobile services.

Building on its collaboration with?Google, Intel continues to work closely with ISVs to help ensure the majority of Android apps run on Intel Atom processor-based devices. Otellini discussed how Intel has all the right tools and expertise to support the robust mobile application developer ecosystem.

Time management tips can take you far beyond basic schedules and to do lists. The 2 Column Method for Planning & Review is designed to help you enhance your effectiveness and reduce the disconnect between your deepest value and how you live today.

You can adapt the 2 Column Method to almost any time management tools you use. Column #1 is where you plan out your schedule. In Column #2, you document how your day actually goes.

I recommend filling out Column #1 the night before. The following day, fill out Column #2 as you go along. Note any variations from your initial plan. Over time, you learn to make your advance scheduling increasingly realistic.

For example, "6 A.M., Get Up" may go in the first column as you sketch out your upcoming day. If that's when you actually get started the following morning, write "Done" in Column #2. If you plan to exercise for 20 minutes whenever you can fit it in, write, "Exercise, 20 minutes" in the first column. The number of minutes you end up exercising goes in the second column.

One of the key things to keep in mind when using the 2 Column Method is to use it for rewarding productivity - not for self-criticism! Over time, you will begin to clearly see your patterns. Are there goals that you consistently don't meet? Maybe you need to move them to another time of day, or consider modifying them in some other way.

The 2 Column Method gives you excellent information about your time baseline, as well as daily opportunities to adjust your planning and find more time! But it does far more than that. Here are 3 significant extra benefits:

If you tend to feel you "should" be working at chores when you exercise and feel you "should" be exercising when doing your chores, simply refer to your Column #1. Stay on schedule, and validate yourself for following through. You'll find the day flows much more smoothly as you banish second-guessing.

Benefit #2: Eliminating Loose Ends.

The more consistently you use the 2 Column Method, the more accurately you can estimate how long each task will take. Then you gain assurance that everything important will get accomplished. No more trying to keep everything in your head, or constantly wondering why your day ends before your list does!

If you find it difficult to disengage from certain activities, the 2 Column Method provides extra incentive. Switching gears as you'd intended allows you to remain in sync with your itinerary. When You Were Young

I?ll have to admit, I never owned a Nintendo 64 when I was younger. My first console was the original PlayStation, so I was raised on games like Crash Bandicoot and Rayman - adventure/platform games that, looking back, I was actually pretty good at. I always made well-timed jumps, my boss fight logic was trained to a high standard by my ruthless father, and despite the odd occasion in which I did screw up and die more than twice in a row, yeah, I was still darn good.

A castle of opportunity!

So imagine my surprise when I recently bought a Nintendo 64, along with Super Mario 64. Excitement was welling up left, right and center, and although I had never played any Super Mario titles as a child (I know, shame on me), I was looking forward to getting back to the genre that I remember from the good ol? days. But as it turns out, my adventure game skills have not gotten better with age. They?ve matured like a carton of semi-skimmed milk. Nastily.

Naughty Bowser

The plot of any Mario game should be familiar to anybody ? beautiful Princess is captured by ruthless tyrant, Bowser, and Mario, the handsome and courageous plumber, has to rescue her.

What I think really made Super Mario 64 hard for me, though, is that there was more to it than this. From what I was expecting, my first battle with Bowser would be my last. I had about eight Power Stars, I was doing pretty well, confident, and so on, and I went into another room of Princess Peach?s castle, expecting a level no more remarkable than the previous worlds I had explored. Fighting that giant Bo-Bomb and throwing him off his perch in the first world, followed by exploring the second world, and trying not to get squished by a giant paving slab, and the third world, where snow is king, and I first experienced the exhilaration of directing Mario down a giant ice-slide.

And so, with this build up, naturally I was shocked, scared and so many more things when I found myself entering Bowser?s domain. At this point in time, I was thinking, ?Wow, this is a really short game.? No it isn?t? it isn?t over.

Game Over

Boss fight? No problem!

As I have mentioned, my skill at jumping from ledge to ledge, platform to platform, all while dodging whatever it is Bowser and his minions want to throw at me, has gone stale. This is the first point I got really really stuck in Super Mario 64.

The first world in which players come across Bowser is a harsh and hostile place. There?s fire shooting out from pretty much everywhere, strange little electric birds circling overhead, and a bottomless drop if you miss a single one of the platforms.

This is where I struggled. I?m still good at boss fights. The great thing about Super Mario 64 is that all the bosses are stupid enough to tell you how to beat them. ?You?ll never be able to throw me off the edge of this platform!? I?m guessing that this is why I was able to enjoy the boss battles so much in this game ? they were pretty easy because the boss wanted me to win.

But the levels, the build up to the fight at the end, that is where I stumble. Bowser?s worlds are no exception. They?re designed like obstacle courses. At least with the previous worlds, if you fell off something, the likelihood was you?d slide down a hill to either where you were five minutes ago, or the start of the level. In Bowser?s worlds, there is no forgiving, there is no forgetting. I can?t tell you how many times I saw Mario get thrown back out of that trapdoor, like it had been disappointed by my efforts. It was embarrassing to play in front of my housemate, who grew up with an N64, watching and laughing as I continued to fail.

Timing is everything in Super Mario 64. Those platforms that move around, I fear them. I see them in my darkest dreams. It?s been a while since I?ve had such sweaty hands. It got to a point where the controller was so slippy that I?m still sure that that was what was making me lose. Oh, and of course, I did that whole clench-up-and-flail-around thing when I made a particularly risky jump. And even after I conquered them, I was still afraid of what future levels might bring.

In the end, I did beat Bowser (the first of three times), and it inspired in me a renewed sense of confidence, that was instantly shattered the moment I used his key to move into the next world. Super Mario 64 is a vicious circle of confidence boosts and then crushing my self esteem. I don?t know how my friends handled it when they were young.

I?m still playing it, every so often, but my self confidence is already low enough, and I don?t need Bowser making it worse with his ridiculous level design and impossible jumps. He may actually be one of the most psychologically evil video game villains I?ve ever come across?

Learning Speed Reading

What have you been reading lately? In a gathering, you can tell who the broad-spectrum readers are. Wide readers often think and speak well. They win the admiration, respect, and good opinion of others. After all, reading expands the mind. In fact, many people consider it one of the most satisfying pleasures of mankind, combining, as it does, mental agility and physical relaxation way above the scale of television.

The act of reading is primarily a mental activity, since you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the storyline of the action thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pain that the characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the different arguments and ideas theorized by the author in that self-help book you are holding.

Being able to read effectively helps you to develop a wide vocabulary through reading different styles of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not know exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence means.

Reading makes you more alert and more curious about new words. Some readers develop ?the dictionary habit?, which means that every time they come across a strange word, they try to figure out what it possibly means from the context. If they are stumped, they refer to the dictionary.

In the same way, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing you to different subjects. You learn to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other forms of education, you are learning by actually doing and while you are reading you are automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too ? like a free by-product!

Basically, reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Only grasping the writers point of view is not really good enough, you have to have a response to what you have read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Try to develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the writer. Always keep your mind open; understand and weigh the ideas that you have read. A practical part of active reading is the development of one?s own opinions.

Now let me tell you to the phenomenon of speed reading. All of the above applies between three and ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that! ? Being able to read, understand and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your subject much more quickly than others. Just imagine how that would help you at work or in school or college ?

Now, let me show you the four primary rules for better reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas, ie look for the subject and predicate ? the main ideas 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit for a specific article that you are reading.

Reading is a fantastically stimulating mental activity. It expands your understanding and capability. You really have so much to gain by learning the joy of reading. So, go on and get down a book right today.

The move is supposed to be ?revenue neutral? ? meaning the Administration is also proposing to close assorted corporate tax loopholes to offset the lost revenues. One such loophole allows corporations to park their earnings overseas where taxes are lower.

Why isn?t the White House just proposing to close the loopholes without reducing overall corporate tax rates? That would generate more tax revenue that could be used for, say, public schools.

It?s not as if corporations are hurting. Quite the contrary. American companies are booking higher profits than ever. They?re sitting on $2 trillion of cash they don?t know what to do with.

And it?s not as if corporate taxes are high. In fact, corporate tax receipts as a share of profits is now at its lowest level in at least 40 years. According to the Congressional Budget Office, corporate federal taxes paid last year dropped to 12.1 percent of profits earned from activities within the United States. That?s a gigantic drop from the 25.6 percent, on average, that corporations paid from 1987 to 2008.

And it?s not that corporations are paying an inordinate share of federal tax revenues. Here again, the reality is just the opposite. Corporate taxes have plummeted as a share of total federal revenues. In 1953, under President Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican, corporate taxes accounted for 32 percent of total federal tax revenues. Now they?re only 10 percent.

But now the federal budget deficit is ballooning, and in less than a year major cuts are scheduled to slice everything from prenatal care to Medicare. So this would seem to be the ideal time to raise corporate taxes ? or at the very least close corporate tax loopholes without lowering corporate rates.

The average American is not exactly enamored with American corporations. Polls show most of the public doesn?t trust them. (A recent national poll by the University of Massachusetts at Lowell found 71 percent with an unfavorable impression of big business ? about the same as those expressing an unfavorable view of Washington.)

The Administration?s initiative doesn?t even make sense as a bargaining maneuver.

Republicans will just accept the Administration?s lower corporate tax rate without closing any tax loopholes. House Republicans have already made it clear that, to them, closing a tax loophole is tantamount to raising taxes. And corporate lobbyists in Washington know better than anyone how to hold tight to loopholes they?ve already got.

Big business will fight to keep their foreign tax shelters. After all, it?s almost impossible to distinguish between their foreign and domestic earnings, which is why the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business lobbies have spent the past three years trying to make it even easier for companies to defer U.S. taxes on income they supposedly earn outside the country.

Representative David Camp, a Michigan Republican who heads the House Ways and Means Committee, has already proposed a 25 percent corporate top rate and changes that would let companies avoid paying U.S. taxes on even more of the income they say they earn outside America.

Nothing is going to be enacted this year, anyway, so it would have made more sense for the Administration to support a hike in corporate taxes ? and use it to highlight the difference between the President and his likely Republican challenger.

Mitt Romney wants to reduce the corporate tax rate to 25 percent before eliminating any tax loopholes. Rick Santorum wants to cut the rate to 17.5 percent and eliminate corporate taxes for manufacturers. Newt Gingrich wants to cut the rate to 12.5 percent and let companies write off all capital investments immediately.

?It?s discouraging. The President gives a rousing speech, as he did on December 6 in Kansas. Then he misses an opportunity to put his campaign where his mouth is.

A United Nations forum focused on ensuring universal access to radio services worldwide concluded in Geneva today with one senior UN official celebrating the gathering for making the world "a better place to live in."

Organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the World Radiocommunication Conference 2012 (WRC-12) examined the technical, regulatory and operational aspects involved in the allocation and sharing of radio frequency in various services such as maritime and aeronautical transport and meteorology and disaster prediction.

"WRC-12 has helped define new and better ways to regulate radio services and applications, and represents a major contribution in making the world a better place for all," <"http://www.itu.int/net/pressoffice/press_releases/2012/10.aspx">said ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Tour?.

Mr. Tour? commended the gathered delegates for their focus on Earth observation radiocommunication applications ? technology which is crucial for monitoring and combating climate change and for disaster prediction.

Radio is the most prevalent mass medium with an ability to reach 95 per cent of the world's population at a low cost, including many remote communities and marginalized groups. It has also proven to be highly resilient as its scope and distribution platforms have grown with the development of new technologies.

With weather, climate and water-related calamities composing more than 90 per cent of the world's natural disasters, radio frequencies are also increasingly essential components of multi-hazard early warning systems.

"New applications for radio waves are being continuously developed, which means that more and more has to be squeezed into the available radio spectrum," said Michel Jarraud, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

"The WRC-12 decisions will help ensure that the signals we need to observe the Earth are not drowned by new signals," he added, noting that the outcome of the conference would provide new opportunities for observation systems needed to monitor, understand and predict the changing climate.

Over 3,000 participants from 165 countries attended the four-week conference in Geneva. In addition to the representatives of ITU member States, some 100 observers from among the agency's 700 private sector members along with international organizations were in attendance.

Giants GM Reese expects some changes

The New York Giants already started preparing to defend their Super Bowl title, just days after winning their second NFL title in five seasons.

General manager Jerry Reese said Thursday he expects a strong core of players to return next year, but cautioned "there will definitely be some changes." That's no surprise considering 20 players are set to become unrestricted free agents in March.

"There's a lot of planning, a lot of discussion on guys and on salaries and where we can go and where we can't go," Reese said in a conference call. "It's a lot of discussion to be had.

"But we'll be ready."

The Giants, just 7-7 with two games remaining in the regular season, finished with six straight wins, including a 21-17 victory over New England last Sunday in the Super Bowl. It was the second time coach Tom Coughlin and quarterback Eli Manning beat Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the Patriots for the title.

Chemistry and camaraderie were among the chief reasons the Giants were able to overcome a four-game losing streak and rebound to win the NFC East title in the last game of the regular season.

"Wins always make you love each other. That's the common denominator: wins," Reese said. "Every team is different, every offseason a team changes, but there will be a strong core of our current players coming back. I can tell you that. But there will definitely be some changes."

Only four of New York's starters will be free agents: tackle Kareem McKenzie, linebacker Chase Blackburn, cornerback Aaron Ross and punter Steve Weatherford. Wide receiver Mario Manningham, defensive end Dave Tollefson, defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, cornerback Terrell Thomas and safety Deon Grant are among the key players that could test free agency.

Manningham, who lost his starting job to Pro Bowl wideout Victor Cruz, could get plenty of attention on the open market after making a sensational 38-yard catch on the Giants' go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter against the Patriots.

"We try to make good football decisions," Reese said. "It would be great to make splashy moves in the offseason, but our goal is to make good football decisions and that's what we try to do every year. We don't just think about our personnel for the current year. We think a couple years down the line and that's important."

One of the top offseason issues involves Osi Umenyiora's contract situation. The two-time Pro Bowl defensive end was a training camp holdout last summer, and had harsh words for Reese after not getting a contract extension.

Umenyiora is slated to earn $3.975 million next season in the final year of a seven-year deal he signed in 2005. He had nine sacks in nine games in 2011.

"We're in the early stages of the evaluation," Reese said. "Osi is under contract. We'll discuss everything as a staff and we'll discuss all issues that could possibly come up for us and we'll come up with a game plan. We'll move on, day by day, and see how things work out for us."

Reese said he expects tight ends Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum to start the season on the physically unable to perform list. Both players tore knee ligaments in the Super Bowl.

Reese praised the team's practice squad and suggested some of those players could fill voids at tight end and other positions.

NYC artist recognized for his unique beeswax art (AP)

NEW YORK ? A black skillet, a heat gun, pigments and beeswax take up a corner of LeRone Wilson's art studio in Harlem.

They are simple tools and materials that his skillful hands use to create unique abstract artworks in beeswax ? richly textured, three-dimensional coral-like sculptural paintings in warm tones of yellow, gold and white and in metallic silver and bronze of varying shapes and sizes.

Wilson's use of molten beeswax ? called encaustic ? is based on an ancient technique used in hieroglyphics. It requires a great deal of patience and control, with one piece taking up to six months to complete.

While he modestly claims he's still learning, the 43-year-old artist is a master in its use ? a medium he has applied in art for 16 years.

In December, Wilson garnered national attention during Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the largest contemporary art fairs in the country. He bested 4,000 other contestants to win the national Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series. The recognition is a result of his perseverance even in the face of hardship.

Sponsored by media mogul Russell Simmons' arts foundation and Barcardi, Bombay's parent company, the prize aims to give exposure to midcareer and emerging artists.

Wilson's winning piece, "A Path Through the Sky," is among 16 of his works that will be exhibited at Simmons' Rush Arts Gallery in Chelsea from Thursday until March 16. Works from the only other Bombay prize winner, Miguel Ovalle, another New Yorker who creates installations out of foam core, will be featured alongside Wilson's.

Wilson's works will be offered for sale, from $2,800 to $15,000.

Of the thousands of pieces shown during Art Basel week, Wilson was the only artist to use encaustic, said Andre Guichard, Bombay's national curator.

"I thought that was very interesting considering it's one of the oldest archival mediums in existence," he said.

There are other artists who use beeswax, including pop art artist Jasper Johns, but usually with other solvents like oils, pastels and newsprint.

"I don't use any other salvage in the wax," said Wilson, adding that he began using it after a friend gave him some beeswax that he didn't want.

"It's a fun process because it's very sculptural," he said.

Wilson's technique sounds simple enough: Melt wax with resin and pigment in a hot skillet to fuse it into one solvent, then apply it using a palette knife to build up patterns and texture onto a wood panel.

"It takes a lot of technical skill for it to look this way," Wilson said of the work hanging on the walls of the small light-filled studio he shares with another artist in a Harlem building overlooking a street of multi-story apartment buildings and older brownstones.

"You have to be patient," Wilson said.

And you have to be quick.

"It dries very quickly. It turns hard as soon as you apply it," explained Wilson, who studied sculpture and architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

For some of the works, he carves the wax "almost like it's clay. That gives me different depths to the piece or different images that I want to portray," he said.

His goal is to create something beautiful without disrupting the purity of the material.

A deeply religious man, Wilson said "A Path Through the Sky," came as a sign from God during a particularly rough patch in his life. Speaking about it at his studio last week, Wilson choked up talking about it.

"God was telling me to let go and let him handle it. He said, `look up,' and I looked up at the sky and I saw the image of what I created for the competition," he said.

The 26-inch by 26-inch cratered white surface depicts clouds moving in a very textural, minimal direction with a 2- to 3-inch band of wax through the center designating a path.

"It came to me that we all have our different paths in life ... We don't know what today will bring, you just have to hold steadfast and get through it," he said.

Guichard said Wilson's story will resonate with viewers.

"There's always a time and space where you feel it's God's push that keeps you going, helps you get through trials and tribulations," he said. "'A Path Through the Sky'" appropriately depicts that message that we can all relate to as viewers."

It wasn't the first time the artist faced a challenge.

Several years ago, unable to sell his work or pay the rent for a storage facility where he kept his artist's tools and work, Wilson lived in a homeless shelter for 5 to 6 months. And perhaps worse, the contents of his storage unit were auctioned off by the facility owner.

Winning the competition was "part of God's blueprint," Wilson said, and the reason he signs all his work "In His Name." It also is the title of his newest work, a 2-foot-by-2-foot square creation that has no texture but has text fused into the wax ? the words "In His Name" written in marker across the entire surface.

"It's in him I get my concepts and titles ... through scripture. And this work belongs to him because he gave it to me. No one has ... ever done anything else to put it in my soul and in my heart other than him," he said.

Wilson's work is represented in the permanent collection of the African American Museum in Dallas. Some of it is displayed on the walls of New York restaurants and he said a Chicago collector owns 30 of the sculptures. He has also been commissioned by New York interior designer Jennifer Post to create several pieces, some of which have been featured in Architectural Digest magazine.

Going forward, Wilson said he wants to continue to use the ancient organic material to create modern works of a larger scale.

Rush Art Gallery curator Charlotte Mouquin called Wilson's use of the material "something new and refreshing."

"LeRone's technique is rare," she said. "It's got a fragility ... and at the same time it has the simplicity of poetic concept."

Czech president to be elected in public vote (AP)

PRAGUE ? Czech citizens will be able to choose their future presidents after a constitutional change approved Wednesday by Parliament that took the decision on who occupies the largely ceremonial post out of lawmakers' hands.

The Senate, which is controlled by the opposition Social Democrats, voted 49-22 on Wednesday in favor of the change. Parliament's lower house gave its green light in December.

Both the country's presidents since the 1989 Velvet Revolution ? the late Vaclav Havel and his political archrival Vaclav Klaus ? were elected by Parliament. But bickering among lawmakers during those votes led to calls for the change.

Future presidents will be chosen in a popular election that will include a run-off if no candidate achieves a majority in the first round. The next presidential election will be held in early 2013, when the current, Klaus, must step down after two terms in office.

Klaus strictly opposed the change, calling it "a fatal mistake." He has been concerned the race for the five-year post could turn into a contest between celebrities or other public figures instead of politicians.

But supporters of the change said it was a right decision.

"I trust the people of the Czech Republic. I trust that voters will responsibly choose the president in the case of popular vote," Social Democrats deputy chairman and Senator Jiri Dienstbier said.

Under the Czech constitution, the president has the power to pick the prime minister, and appoint Constitutional Court judges and members of the Central Bank board. Otherwise the president has little executive power and the country is run by the government chosen and led by the prime minister.

According to the amendment, a candidate for the presidency has to be proposed by 20 lawmakers from Parliament lower house, 10 senators from the upper house or 50,000 citizens.

So far, only the conservative TOP 09 party, a member of the three-party governing coalition, has declared its official candidate: its chairman and Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg.

Also, Jan Fischer, who gained significant popularity when he led a caretaker government in 2009-10 as prime minister, has said he would run.

The conservative Civic Democratic Party of Prime Minister Petr Necas is likely to choose from two notable candidates ? lower house speaker Miroslava Nemcova and Senate deputy speaker Premysl Sobotka.

Hackers post W.Va. police officers' personal info

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? Hackers affiliated with the group Anonymous obtained personal information for more than 150 police officers from an old website of the West Virginia Chiefs of Police Association and posted the data online.

The FBI is investigating, said William Roper, the association's president and the police chief of Ranson, W.Va., said.

"It's a shame that folks have to do this," Roper said Wednesday.

He said the hackers obtained the home addresses, home phone numbers and cellphone numbers of current and retired police chiefs from a website that has not been used in two years. The association has a new website but some information was still stored on the old one.

"I don't think they gained anything with this," said Roper, who was among the officers whose information was posted by the hackers. "They just obtained information that's already easy to get."

"My number's in the book. My cellphone is a department cellphone so it's readily easy to get" he said.

A group called CabinCr3W posted the information and included a link to it in a Twitter post on Sunday.

In an online message by CabinCr3w addressed to "citizens of West Virginia," the hacking group says it has been monitoring cases of police brutality.

"We are here to remind you that we the taxpayers pay your exorbitant salaries, and those salaries of your officers," the message says. "Your job is to protect and serve, not brutalize the very people that pay your wages. Muzzle your dogs of war, or we will expose more of your sensative (sic) information."

The state Office of Technology notified the association on Monday that the website had been compromised after it was alerted by the Multi-State Information & Analysis Center, which detected suspicious activity, said Kyle Schafer, the state's chief technology officer.

"Our folks took that call and went out and took a look, saw the information and knew that wasn't right," he said.

Roper said he notified the association's members and other law enforcement agencies. He has not received any reports of officers receiving harassing or crank phone calls since the information was posted.

Roper believes the hackers have too much time on their hands. If they are arrested, "we'll give them things to do to occupy themselves, incarceration if possible," he said.

The Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/zLZxrB) first reported the hacking.

Clarksburg, W.Va., Police Chief Marshall Goff and Charleston, W.Va., Police Chief Brent Webster were among those whose information was posted online. Both said Wednesday that they have been contacted by the FBI about the incident.

"Like any of the public out there, we are at times victims also," Goff said.

Goff said he does not believe the hacker group accomplished anything because his information is already publicly accessible.

"My number is published in the book because I feel that as an official figure I need to be accessible to the public," he said.

Webster said he was not overly concerned because he did not provide much information on the website.

"But I don't like it," he said.

CabinCr3w's Twitter page is laced with references to the hacking collective Anonymous.

Last week, Anonymous hit the web with a slew of hacks, including releasing a recording of a conference call between the FBI and Scotland Yard in which law enforcers discussed how to stop the hacking group.

Anonymous also claimed credit for defacing the Boston Police Department's website. And in Salt Lake City, officials said the personal information of confidential informants and tipsters had been compromised.

Roper said his association's old website will be taken down after the investigation is completed. The group's board of directors will discuss whether the current website needs additional security measures.
