Google Earth, Maps get new high-res aerial and satellite imagery

3D City View for iOS isn't the only update from the Google Maps and Earth team this week, they've also spruced up their services with new imagery. Fresh high-resolution aerial and satellite photos have been added for a roster of 25 cities and 72 countries or regions, ranging from Antelope Wells, New Mexico to Zimbabwe. In addition, seven international locales and 21 US cities received the 45-degree view treatment, letting you gaze at skylines from a different perspective. The maps are already available, so you can peruse new satellite images of London's Olympic Park and Village just in time for the festivities. For the full list of areas with crisper cartographic visuals, check out the source below.

Fears grow over fate of Syrian city of Aleppo

(AP) ? International concern was mounting Friday over a looming massacre as Syrian troops bombarded the besieged city of Aleppo with artillery, strafed it with aircraft and pulled in major reinforcements ready to crush the outgunned rebels.

The battle is one of the most important of the 17-month-old uprising. With a population of about 3 million, Aleppo is Syria's largest city and commercial hub, a key pillar of support for President Bashar Assad's regime.

The rebels controlled several neighborhoods but were facing reports of troops and tanks massing outside the city. The nonstop fighting in Aleppo has already claimed the lives of at least 145 rebels and civilians in the last six days, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay expressed "deep alarm," saying in a statement that the "reported build-up of forces in and around Aleppo, bodes ill for the people of that city ... it goes without saying, that the increasing use of heavy weapons, tanks, attack helicopters and ? reportedly ? even jet fighters in urban areas has already caused many civilian casualties."

In at least two formerly rebel-held Syrian towns over the summer, al-Qubeir and Houla, hundreds of civilians were killed after pro-regime militias moved in, according to activists.

It has been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government with rebel assaults first on the capital, Damascus, and then on Aleppo, as well as several high-profile defections and a bomb that killed four top security officials.

The government, however, struck back and quashed the assault on the capital with a combination of heavy weapons and house-to-house searches. Scores of people were killed. Similar tactics were expected in the coming days to keep Aleppo from falling into rebel hands.

"I think there will be a huge massacre in Aleppo," said Michel Kilo, a veteran opposition figure living in exile in Paris. "There will be a terrible revenge against civil society." He said all of Aleppo, once believed to be a regime stronghold, was revolting against Assad's regime.

His concerns were echoed by British Foreign Secretary William Hague and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, both of whom called on Assad to immediately halt the attack on Aleppo.

"I am deeply concerned by reports that the Syrian government is amassing its troops and tanks around Aleppo, and has already begun a vicious assault on the city and its civilians," Hague said, speaking at the opening of the Olympics in London. "This dire situation illustrates very strongly why the people of Syria needed the U.N. Security Council resolution we proposed last week."

Speaking at the same event, Ban added that "the violence from both sides must stop for the sake of the suffering civilians of Syria."

Western nations in the Security Council have been trying to pass a strong resolution condemning Syria and imposing harsher international sanctions. Russia and China have blocked them, citing concerns that they could pave the way for foreign military intervention ? as was the case in Libya.

The threat of Libyan forces retaking the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in March 2011 resulted in a U.N.-mandated no-fly zone that opened the way for a vigorous NATO bombing campaign. Russia maintains that NATO overstepped its bounds and does not want that to happen in Syria too.

As a result, there is little the international community can do to help the rebels surrounded in Aleppo ? or in other Syrian cities like Hama, Homs, Deir al-Zour and Daraa, where there are daily reports of bombardments and casualties. Activists estimate more than 150 people are killed every day nationwide. July is set to become the bloodiest month of an uprising that activists say has claimed 19,000 lives since it began on March 2011.

Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar are believed to be funding the rebels through Turkey and there have been indications that the ragtag Free Syrian army is using better weapons and tactics, as seen by their tenacious hold on neighborhoods in Aleppo and other cities.

The former head of the U.N. observer mission said Friday that he expected the Assad regime to fall eventually, but that the aftermath could witness even more bloodshed.

"It's impossible to imagine a future in Syria where the current people in power remain in power. So in that view, it's just a matter of time before this regime collapses," Maj. Gen. Robert Mood told a news conference in Oslo, Norway.

Mood, who left Damascus on July 19, warned that the regime still has a great deal of military muscle. The core of the army, which has vast reservoirs of weaponry, has remained loyal to Assad.

But the regime has been embarrassed by several high-ranking defections including three diplomats. On Friday, Ikhlas Bawadi became the first member of Syria's new parliament elected in May to defect.

"The violence being perpetrated by Bashar Assad's regime against innocent people who are seeking freedom is unacceptable," she told the Turkish Anadolu agency. "I could no longer tolerate the oppression, that's why I left. I will keep working to free all my friends from the oppression."

In Damascus, meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross said it was temporarily moving some of its foreign staff to neighboring Lebanon. A Red Cross spokesman in Geneva, Hicham Hassan, said the move was prompted by security concerns but that a core team of about 50 staff would remain.

Hassan also told The Associated Press that the Syrian Arab Red Crescent was suspending some of its operations in the capital because of "the deteriorating security situation."

"This in no way means we are suspending our activities, especially at a time when needs are growing. ... They will go back to Damascus at the appropriate time."

Poland, meanwhile, announced that it had closed its embassy and evacuated its diplomats from Damascus. The Polish embassy had been representing U.S. interests in the Syria since the U.S. closed its own in February.

Google unveils ultrafast Internet/TV in Kansas City

Google Inc made its foray into the market for bundled Internet and television services on Thursday, promising access speeds more than 100 times faster than those of traditional U.S. cable and telecommunications companies.

The Web search leader unveiled its ultra-high speed Google Fiber service in Kansas City, Missouri, and could start installations in September, executives said. Google hopes to roll out the service to other cities later.

"Access is the next frontier that needs to be opened," Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette said. "We're going to do it profitably. That is our plan."

"We are at a crossroad," he added, noting that Internet speeds had leveled out for broadband since around 2000. "We at Google we believe there is no need to wait."

Google Fiber's ultra high-speed connections and television offerings are aimed at surpassing those of current providers, allowing users to search live channels, Netflix, YouTube, recorded shows and tens of thousands of hours of on-demand programming. However, no phone service is available.

"The phone is really a 1940s thing. Why have a landline? It's sitting there, you use it once every two weeks," Pichette said.

Google said it also intends to roll out product packages for businesses, but would not provide details.

Google Fiber includes more than 100 networks and costs $120 a month for a package of TV, 1 gigabyte per second Internet speeds and 1 terabyte of cloud storage.

The package includes popular networks owned by major media companies such as Comcast Corp's NBC Universal, Discovery Communications and Viacom Inc. Premium movie networks are available from Liberty Media's Starz for an extra fee.

But it excludes several major TV names, such as News Corp's Fox cable channels; Time Warner networks like CNN, TNT and TBS, as well as Walt Disney Co cable channels like ESPN and Disney children networks.

Google executives said the company is still in negotiations to add more content.

"They need to be able to offer something that is everything people have now and more," said Ben Schachter, an analyst with Macquarie Research.

"People are going to have high expectations for this. The worst thing they can do is come out and disappoint."

Google is also offering an Internet-only package priced at $70 a month. The download speeds would be around 1 gigabyte a second, according to Google executives.

Google is charging a $300 installation fee, saying consumers should treat it as a "home improvement" cost.

The initial service area includes central Kansas City, Missouri and all of the city of neighboring Kansas City, Kansas.

This market is dominated by Time Warner Cable Inc, which charges $99.95 for its fastest Internet-only service there. Google Fiber would be 20 times faster.

Time Warner spokesman Justin Venech said the second largest U.S. cable operator had a "robust and adaptable network" and welcomed the competition.

Features and freebee
Google Fiber includes such features as the ability to record eight TV shows at a time and store up to 500 hours of high definition programming. Users can choose to use a tablet or smartphone as a voice-activated remote control.

Google is offering its Nexus 7 tablet with the Google TV app to early users of the service.

Google said it is setting up a 6-week "rally" for consumers to vote on where the first fiber communities, or "fiberhoods," should be installed in the Kansas City area.

Consumers must pay $10 to register their household online for service. About 50 "neighbors" will need to register in order for their area to be eligible for installation services, according to Google executives.

Whether or not consumers will embrace the new offerings remains to be seen. But officials said they are confident Kansas City will be a showcase of success for a larger rollout.

"Google is a very different company," said Kevin Lo, general manager of Google Access. "And this is not a short-term project."

The Mind and Chronic Medical Conditions | MindBodySpirit.me

By Larry M. Berkelhammer, PhD

For millions of people living with chronic medical conditions their lives look like this:
? Life consists of going to invasive medical tests & treatments.
? Their entire life revolves around being sick.
? They begin to view themselves as a disease with a person attached to it.
? They very commonly fall into a passive, victim stance due to unremitting physical disability, dysfunction, pain, fatigue, medical appointments, and a broken medical system (in the U.S.).
? That is not a life that is conducive to health.

New biomarkers and especially genetic markers are allowing physicians to become increasingly effective in diagnosing chronic medical conditions, yet treatment for chronic conditions is still quite ineffective. There are literally thousands of chronic and life-threatening medical conditions (some common and some rare) for which there are now clear diagnoses but no cures, and few effective treatments. It can be incredibly exasperating to receive such a diagnosis and learn that modern medicine offers no good options other than drugs that control the symptoms but do not stop the disease process. Sometimes, there are treatments that do in fact slow the disease progression but many of those medications create other problems when the drugs are taken long-term.

?

Even the process of finding the diagnosis is not assured. Many people still spend up to twenty years going from one specialist to another in the hope of connecting their symptoms with a diagnosis. Quite often, different specialists give different diagnoses, prognoses, and treatments and the treatments often don?t work due to having an incorrect diagnosis.
I spent years wondering how to best treat people for whom medicine seemed to have no answers or has poor answers. In reviewing hundreds of studies, I came to the conclusion that for those of us living with chronic health challenges, mental training can make an enormous difference is health and wellbeing.

?

An advanced metastatic cancer patient once asked psychooncologist Lawrence LeShan if he thought the chemotherapy would work; LeShan answered: Only if you?re in there too.
Quality of health and wellbeing are very positively influenced by a sense of mastery, which is about living with intentionality and direction rather than being dependent on others to get well, or to stay well.

?

There are many ways to cultivate mastery. Here are the ones most substantiated by research:
? Identify personal life values and find ways to live by those values.
? Practice authenticity, which includes authentic self-expression.
? Cultivate empathy, compassion, and connection with others?all others?not just those close to us. This is enormously challenging, yet is profoundly life-altering.
? Engage in activities that provide meaning and purpose both at work and play.
? Pursue activities where you have a sense of community and social support.
? Practice ?loving self-care,? which is the application of mindfulness to self-care.
? Develop a mindfulness practice and integrate it into every aspect of life. This allows us to identify cognitive fusion and to defuse from private events.
? Get involved in an organization that serves the needs of an underserved population.
? Find an experienced psychotherapist (ideally group therapy) whose orientation is skill-building rather than psychodynamic or psychoanalytic.

?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is tailor-made for the development of mastery because of its focus on identification of and guidance in pursuing personal life values. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is another skill-building-based psychotherapy.

Gender Games

This is where the IOC?s task starts to seem harder than pulling off a triple twisting Yurchenko. You can see the temptation to rely on the legal classification of an athlete?s sex in her home country rather than going with a universal test. Yet in the knock-down, cheat-prone world of elite sports, some biologically based criteria are surely needed. Here are some distinctions we could fairly draw: People who are chromosomally XX and living as legal women should compete as female Olympic athletics, no matter what their bodies look like and no matter their testosterone levels. Under the current policy, XX-ers with naturally high testosterone could be ineligible to compete as women, and that seems wrong. Some XY-ers should also be deemed women for the purposes of sport, like those with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome and many with partial androgen insensitivity syndrome, too. Yes, this last category would entail some hard judgment calls, but at least it?s a smaller group. And rather than a narrow focus on testosterone, a more encompassing algorithm that takes into account chromosomes, genitals, gonads, and hormones seems like the only plausible approach. It?s nice to imagine that a simple test could also be a fair test. But in sports as in life, that?s often just not true.
