Dominique Strauss-Kahn and NY maid accuser to settle

But it might not mean the end of legal troubles for Strauss-Kahn. He is awaiting a ruling on whether he is linked to 'pimping' in connection with a French prostitution ring.

By Jennifer Peltz,?Associated Press / November 30, 2012

This combo made from file photos shows former International Monetary Fund chief leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Nafissatou Diallo. A person familiar with the case says Strauss-Kahn and Diallo, a New York City hotel maid who accused him of trying to rape her, have reached an agreement to settle her lawsuit. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity to discuss the private negotiation. The details of the deal are unknown.

Word of a settlement agreement between former International Monetary Fund chiefDominique?Strauss-Kahn and a New York hotel maid who accused him of trying to rape her could bring an end to a saga that has tarnished Strauss-Kahn's reputation, ended his hopes for the French presidency and renewed a debate about the credibility of sexual assault accusers.

But it might not mean the end of legal troubles for Strauss-Kahn. He is awaiting a ruling on whether he is linked to "pimping" in connection with a French prostitution ring.

A person familiar with the New York case said Thursday that lawyers for Strauss-Kahn and the housekeeper, the Guinean-born Nafissatou Diallo, made the as-yet-unsigned agreement within recent days. A court date is expected next week, though the day wasn't set, the person said.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private agreement.

Details of the deal, which comes after prosecutors dropped related criminal charges last year, weren't immediately known and likely will be veiled by a confidentiality agreement. That could prevent Strauss-Kahn and Diallo from speaking publicly about a May 2011 encounter that she called a brutally sudden attack and he termed a consensual "moral failing."

Strauss-Kahn lawyer William W. Taylor III declined to comment. Lawyers for Diallo didn't immediately respond to phone and email messages.

Diallo, 33, and Strauss-Kahn, 63, crossed paths when she arrived to clean his luxury Manhattan hotel suite. She told police he chased her down, tried to pull down her pantyhose and forced her to perform oral sex.

The allegation let loose a spiral of accusations about the sexual conduct of Strauss-Kahn, a married diplomat and economist who had long been dubbed the "great seducer."

With DNA evidence showing a sexual encounter and Diallo providing a gripping description of an attack, the Manhattan district attorney's office initially said it had a strong and compelling case. But within six weeks, prosecutors' confidence began to ebb as they said Diallo had lied about her past ? including a false account of a previous rape ? and her actions after leaving Strauss-Kahn's room.

Diallo said she told the truth about their encounter. But the district attorney's office dropped the charges in August 2011, saying prosecutors could no longer ask a jury to believe her.

Diallo had sued Strauss-Kahn in the meantime, with her lawyers saying she would get her day in a different court. Strauss-Kahn called the lawsuit defamatory and countersued her for $1 million.

Strauss-Kahn's whereabouts Friday were unclear. After his return to France in September 2011, Strauss-Kahn initially kept a low profile. But in recent months, he has shown signs he is trying to rebuild his professional reputation, giving speeches at international conferences and reportedly setting up a consulting company in Paris.

Unconfirmed reports surfaced Wednesday that Diallo was in Paris this week on the invitation of a feminist group. A French lawyer who works with her U.S. defense team, Thierry de Montbrial, told The Associated Press that the reports were untrue. He declined any comment on the settlement.

Strauss-Kahn initially said he had diplomatic immunity, an argument the judge turned down in May. Strauss-Kahn's lawyers had since asked the judge to throw out part of her claim for other legal reasons. Court records show the judge had yet to rule on that and several other legal issues, and it appeared that a high-stakes step ? depositions, or pretrial questioning under oath ? had not yet been taken. Depositions can give both sides information and a better picture of how strong the key parties and other witnesses might be in court.

While the vast majority of civil cases end in settlements, some legal observers were surprised that the deal between Strauss-Kahn and Diallo came before the legal arguments were resolved.

"I really expected it to go a little farther," said Matthew Galluzzo, a criminal defense lawyer and civil litigator who has been following the Strauss-Kahn case closely.

Still, the case likely had taken a toll on both Diallo, a single mother of a teenage daughter, and Strauss-Kahn, who had been seen as a potential leading candidate for the French presidency before his New York arrest.

In France, judges are to decide by Dec. 19 whether to annul charges linking him to a suspected prostitution ring run out of a luxury hotel in Lille. He acknowledges attending "libertine" gatherings but denies knowing that some women present were paid.

In August, a separate case against Strauss-Kahn, centered on allegations of rape in a Washington, D.C., hotel, was dropped after French prosecutors said the accuser, an escort, changed her account to say she wasn't raped.

Soon after Strauss-Kahn's arrest in New York last year, French writer Tristane Banon accused him of attempting to rape her during an interview in 2003, a claim he called imaginary and slanderous. Prosecutors said they believed the encounter qualified as a sexual assault, but the legal timeframe to pursue her complaint had elapsed.

The Associated Press does not name people who report being sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Diallo and Banon have done.

Strauss-Kahn has separated from his wife, journalist and heiress Anne Sinclair, who stood by him through the allegations in New York. The two said they were filing a lawsuit this summer against a French magazine, citing invasion of privacy, for reporting they had split, but Sinclair later acknowledged it was true.

The New York Times first reported the agreement between Strauss-Kahn and Diallo.

Video: Clinton tests Iran on nuclear program

>> is expected to vote today on a new package of tough sanctions against iran , but last night secretary of state hillary clinton offered iran a last chance to come clean about its nuclear program . nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell is in washington with details. good morning to you, andrea.

>> good morning, natalie. hillary clinton made a significant overture to iran saying the u.s. is ready to resolve the nuclear issue, if iran 's supreme court leader is serious about making a deal. after a decade of threats and stalemates between the u.s. and iran over its nuclear program , the white house wants to test iran 's claim that it is not building a nuclear weapon .

>> that we continue to believe that there is still a window of opportunity to reach some kind of resolution over iran's nuclear program . now, i'm not, you know, a wild-eyed optimist about it, but i think it's imperative that we do everything we did unilaterally, bilaterally, multi-laterally to test that proposition.

>> reporter: clinton says the timing is right. the u.s. election is over. iran 's won't be held until june.

>> president obama 's instinct, which is to try to see if iran is amenable to negotiations is the right one, because that will tell us whether or not iran is serious about stopping short of a nuclear weapon .

>> reporter: tehran is under pressure. its economy in shambles after years of sanctions for not letting u.n. inspectors into all of its nuclear facilities . now the white house wants to show the world it's exhausting the diplomatic options.

>> if it is rejected, it will have smoked smoked out the iranians as to their intentions. the question, of course, is there a deal that we could accept that the iranians could accept? i tend to be skeptical.

>> reporter: of course, iran and the u.s. have other big disagreements over iran 's military aid to the regime in syria and the rockets it smuggles to hamas, but in the second term, no foreign policy challenge is more critical to the president than dealing with iran 's suspected nuclear threat.

>> andrea mitchell in washington, thanks so much, andrea.

Mimicking public health strategies could improve cyber security

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Mimicking public health strategies, such as maintaining good "cyber hygiene," could improve cyber security, according to a new paper by a team of economists and public health researchers at RTI International.

The paper, published in the November/December issue of Cross Talk, provides a substantive look at how public health strategies and research methodologies could be used to guide cyber security strategies.

Currently, no centralized approach has been successfully used to coordinate action in improving cyber security. The government has played a relatively limited role, developing standards for industry and, more recently, distributing education materials to schools and civic organizations, but most of the focus has been on business security.

"The public health community has been very successful in identifying, monitoring, and reducing the health impacts of many types of threats," said Brent Rowe, a senior economist at RTI and the paper's lead author. "Given the many similarities between public health and cyber security, the cyber security community would be wise to leverage relevant public health strategies and analysis techniques."

The paper takes a detailed look at public health frameworks that can be used to identify and describe specific cyber security threats and potential solutions.

According to the authors, some of the key lessons from the public health community include:

?Introduce potential solutions to individuals in a way that establishes a measure of trust

?Provide solutions in a convenient and attractive framework (individuals will not engage if participation is difficult, expensive or inconvenient)

?Communicate the nature of threats and interventions to a wide variety of audiences

?Involve multiple organizations (government and nongovernment) in responding to a threat or set of threats

?Consider the unpredictability of individual behavior

"Although the idea of organizing the community of cyber security stakeholders similar to the complexity and scale of public health is daunting, public health research, implementation, and evaluation strategies offer a wealth of well-tested approaches that could be easily leveraged to study cyber security topics, such as how to better understand cyber security risk preferences," said Michael Halpern, Ph.D., a senior public health researcher and an RTI Senior Fellow.

94% The Sessions

All Critics (145) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (137) | Rotten (8)

Achieves its sunny disposition by pulling punches.

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

This is a crowd-pleaser of the finest sort.

Using only his tilted head, his eyes, nose, and mouth and that quizzical voice, Hawkes brings O'Brien to life.

It is rare to watch a movie where sex is treated with maturity, religion is treated with respect and characters are so heart-warmingly written and portrayed.

Raw, unrestrained and sympathetic without giving in to melodrama, 'The Sessions' is about a man facing a physical challenge who decides he wants to become intimate with a woman.

An intelligent, funny, insightful film that offers a frank examination of sex. It's not prurient or titillating, just truthful.

A remarkable actor, John Hawkes, gives a remarkable performance as a remarkable character.

Surprisingly funny and touching.

Presents the sensitive O'Brien as a brave, funny, unselfish and unlikely romantic-fantasy dream hero for disappointed, weary or jaded older female moviegoers.

The uplifting struggle for living a life of dignity for paralyzed from the neck down polio victim Mark O'Brien.

The sex scenes are frank and explicit, but never cheap and exploitative. (Yes, they get naked. Grow up.) The nudity isn't airbrushed pin-up perfection, but raw and real - and all the more lovely and moving because of it.

Taking the good with the bad, this isn't a terrible movie, though it is being rather overhyped. I found myself laughing a lot and enjoying the transformations the actors go through, but an unengaging story only serves to drag it down.

A film, inspired by the life of the late poet-journalist Mark O'Brien, that celebrates the relationship between physical and emotional intimacy.

Not just another weepy drama of overcoming odds, a My Left Foot with a different appendage. The Sessions is often brazenly funny, not from shocking dialogue but characters reacting the way people do, especially with such a flustering subject as sex.

an unusually frank and frequently humorous meditation on the transformative power of connection

Take away the nudity and the frank sex talk and you'd pretty much be left with a high-minded TV movie -- with unusually good actors.

Hunt's tangible disregard for false modesty does justice to the misunderstood surrogacy profession, while Hawkes' committed yet matter-of-fact portrayal of O'Brien masterfully avoids theatricality or sappy heartstring tugging.

Lewin has never had talent like Hawkes, Hunt, and Macy as his instruments before, and he makes the best of them.

Popular sex therapist Dr. Ruth once said that sexual surrogates are "illegal." The Sessions makes them mainstream.

An adult film that approaches the serious subject of sex with refreshingly explicit honesty.

The honest performances and assured direction makes The Sessions an extremely accomplished film that celebrates sexuality.

John Hawkes and Helen Hunt generate an endearing chemistry, here, turning in a couple of virtuoso performances deserving of serious consideration come Oscar season.

Wall Street opens flat on fiscal cliff caution

4 hrs.

Stocks opened slightly lower on Tuesday?as worry over the threat to the economy posed by the fiscal cliff?offset optimism from a deal to ease Greece's debt burden.?

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones industrial average dipped 33.02 points, or 0.25 percent, to 12,934.35. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index shed 2.58 points, or 0.18 percent, to 1,403.71. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 4.07 points, or 0.14 percent, to 2,972.71.?

Market sentiment improved after European finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund clinched agreement late on Monday on reducing Greece's debt and releasing emergency loans to keep Greece from defaulting.?

But as Democrats and Republicans prepared to resume budget negotiations this week in Washington, the market turned cautious.?

As of Monday's close, the S&P 500 was holding above the 1,400 level it retook last week. But volume continued to be weak as traders awaited any advance in talks between the Obama administration and Congress to avert a series of spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to begin next year. Last week, the broad stock index rose nearly 4 percent.?

"Advancing volume trends have failed to surge during the S&P 500's 4 percent bounce from its November 16 low, suggesting recent strength can be attributed to a lack of selling pressure rather than fresh buying demand," said Ari Wald, analyst at the PrinceRidge Group in New York.?

"We would like to see this spread turn positive to confirm an upward S&P 500 reversal," he said.?

Government data on October durable goods orders showed a gauge of planned spending by businesses increased by the most in five months. But a fourth straight month of declines in shipments underscored the damage that fears of tighter fiscal policy next year are having on the economy. Market reaction to the Commerce Department report was muted.?

"On balance, you would have to look at this number and say it is encouraging. It is one piece of a many piece puzzle, but a good piece," said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors LLC in Albany, New York.?

"For those of us that are worried about the economy in 2013, given the uncertainty of the fiscal cliff, this is a little bit helpful. But that doesn't remove the overarching worry about the cliff or that tax policy and spending policy will not be right, given the weak economy."?

Separate data showed U.S. single-family home prices rose in September in a further sign that the housing market is on the mend.?

Europe is preparing to follow the United States in delaying the introduction of stricter rules on bank capital, while it lobbies for a reconsideration of the U.S. stance, EU sources said.?

However, the head of the Basel Committee at the Bank of International Settlements told Reuters on Tuesday that the introduction of stricter capital rules for banks will go ahead as planned on January 1.?

Reuters contributed to this report.?

PFT: Eagles cut Babin | Where will he land?

Andy ReidAP

The Philadelphia Eagles have shifted into full-blown evaluation mode.? So why not evaluate another member of the staff as the interim head coach?

With each passing loss, more and more members of the media and fans are pointing out that the time has come to fire Andy Reid.? For two very good reasons, however, owner Jeffrey Lurie should ride it out.

First, is there anyone on the current staff who deserves a crack at coaching the team if Reid is relieved of his duties?? The Eagles haven?t won a game since Todd Bowles became defensive coordinator.? Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is tied too closely to Reid.? That leaves special-teams coordinator Bobby April.

Second, and more importantly, the firing of Reid and the hiring of an on-staff interim replacement could provide the kick in the pants the players need.? As we explained a few weeks back, current players tend to play hard for an interim head coach, not because they want to help the interim head coach get the job but because they know that, if the interim head coach gets the job, the players are more likely to keep their jobs.

Then, once the interim head coach becomes the permanent head coach, the players can go back to stinking.

So if Reid goes and someone else becomes the interim head coach and a fan base starved for wins finally gets a few of them, the interim head coach could start to look like a good candidate for the job.? It would be better, then, to wait until the season ends, move on from Reid, and find a new coach from outside the organization.

That said, who is really going to want this job?? The Eagles have no clear-cut quarterback, looming salary-cap problems, and an uncharacteristic number (for the Eagles) of aging players.? Recent drafts have featured more misses than hits, and whoever takes the job will have to deal with RG3, Eli Manning, and the Cowboys twice per year.

If Chip Kelly or Jon Gruden have options, they could be inclined to opt for another opportunity.

Gift Guide: Krups EA82 Automatic Coffee/Espresso Maker

giftguide12-krupsShort Version People like coffee. People like coffeemakers. People like coffeemakers that make great coffee. That’s why you should look into the EA82, Krups’ fanciest coffee maker, an all-automatic espresso and long coffee maker that makes a nearly perfect cup with your own beans nearly every time. It’s probably one of the best home, push-button coffee makers I’ve ever used. Long Version Features: Automatic espresso and coffee settings Uses any unground beans Built-in milk frother Removable coffee grounds tray Comes in red and black Info: MSRP: $1,200 ($740 on Amazon) Available: Now Retailers: KrupsElite.com The EA82 is… … a simple coffee maker that grids, brews, and blows out a good cup of coffee or espresso in a few minutes. You can set the amount of java coming out with a simple turn of the dial and it includes a self-cleaning function that keeps it going. A two year warranty ensures your maker won’t die in battle. Buy the EA82 for… … lazy coffee snobs who are tired of the limited offerings available via traditional “pod” machines and may want something a bit more interesting than an aeropress or similar coffee accouterments. Making a cup of Joe is as easy as selecting a brew – espresso, strong espresso, coffee, or long coffee – and pressing a button. You get up to 240 ml of coffee out of this machine with one button-press. The coffee is very consistent with a nice head of crema (although it might not be as thick as some less robotic machines) and you can change flavors as easily as swapping out the beans you use for your brew. A self-cleaning function keeps it running smoothly and the milk frother makes a nice latte or cappuccino. Arguably this is an expensive gift to give someone just to make a little coffee. I particularly liked this device because it was so easy – just pour in some beans, add some water, and press a button. If you’re buying for a real coffee snob, I’d confirm this is exactly what they were looking for. However, if you want a quick and easy and consistent cuppa, this is for you. Because… … coffee fans can be very specific about their brews and consistency is important. You’re going to want to check with the intended recipient if they really want to go this route but as a lad who can’t stand lots

Appeals court upholds New York gun licensing law

(Reuters) - The state of New York can continue to require residents who want to carry a concealed handgun in public to obtain a special license, a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York rejected a challenge brought by several Westchester residents and the Second Amendment Foundation against the state's handgun licensing scheme.

Like numerous other states, New York imposes restrictions on individuals who wish to carry concealed firearms in public.

Under New York law, people can apply to carry a handgun outside the home for the limited purposes of hunting or target practice. But those who want to carry concealed handguns in public without any restrictions must convince state licensing officers they have a special need for self-protection greater than others in the general community.

Five individuals who were denied permits sued four state court judges, who also serve as licensing officers, arguing that the requirement violated their right to bear arms under the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

In requesting a carry permit, one of the plaintiffs had argued that as a transgender female, she was more likely to be a victim of violence. Others argued they were in good standing in the community and gainfully employed.

But state licensing officers denied their applications, saying they had failed to show special need for self-protection.

A unanimous three-judge panel of the 2nd Circuit upheld the state's licensing law, ruling the Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep arms for self-defense in the home, but does not extend to a right to carry concealed handguns in public.

The decision affirms a lower-court ruling from last year.

"Outside the home, firearm rights have always been more limited, because public safety interests often outweigh individual interests in self defense," Judge Richard Wesley wrote for the panel.

In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a District of Columbia ban on handguns in the home. The plaintiffs had argued that the decision, District of Columbia v. Heller, made New York's handgun law unconstitutional.

But the 2nd Circuit panel concluded that the Supreme Court had only found a constitutional right to possess handguns in the home. The scope of that right outside the home was less clear, the panel said, but noted a longstanding tradition of states regulating firearm possession in public.

Alan Gura, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said he disagreed with the ruling and planned to appeal either to a larger panel of the 2nd Circuit or the U.S. Supreme Court.

The state has a right to regulate the carrying of handguns in public, Gura said, but the regulations must be objective.

"If the regulation merely states that the police can do what they feel like in terms of licensing people, then it's really just an arbitrary system," he said.

Gura, who argued the Heller case before the Supreme Court challenging the District of Columbia handgun ban, said the issue of Second Amendment protections in the public sphere would likely land before the Supreme Court in the near future.

Other cases are working their way through the courts, challenging similar licensing laws in California, Maryland and New Jersey, he said.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, whose office represents the state defendants, welcomed the ruling in a statement.

"This unanimous decision is a victory for New York State law, the United States Constitution and families across New York who are rightly concerned about the scourge of gun violence that all too often plagues our communities," Schneiderman said.

The case is Kachalsky et al v. County of Westchester, 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 11-3642.

Obama may get chance to end Benghazi PR disaster

(AP) ? The White House could finally have its chance to close the books on its Benghazi public relations disaster, as key Republicans signal they might not stand in the way of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to become the next secretary of state.

"I think she deserves the ability and the opportunity to explain herself and her position," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told "Fox News Sunday." ''But she's not the problem. The problem is the president of the United States," who, McCain said, misled the public on terrorist involvement.

Rice is widely seen as President Barack Obama's top pick to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as the nation's top diplomat. But Rice's reputation took a serious hit this fall when she relied on unclassified talking points provided by the intelligence community that portrayed the attack in Benghazi, Libya, as a spontaneous assault by a mob angered by an anti-Muslim video posted on YouTube.

Intelligence officials quickly amended their assessment to conclude the attack hadn't been related to other film protests across the Middle East. But that revised narrative was slow to reach the public, prompting Republicans to allege a White House cover-up ahead of the Nov. 6 election.

The attack killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, a State Department computer specialist and two former Navy SEALs who were working as contract security guards.

McCain's remarks were in contrast to his previous stance that Rice wasn't qualified to replace Clinton, who is expected to step down soon, and that he would do "whatever is necessary" to block Rice's possible nomination.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, McCain's close friend and colleague on the Senate Armed Services Committee, told ABC's "This Week" he still suspects the White House intentionally glossed over obvious terrorist links in the attack to keep voters from questioning Obama's handling of national security.

But instead of repeating his prior assertion that he was "dead set" against a Rice promotion, Graham suggested he looked forward to hearing her out. If Rice were nominated, "there will be a lot of questions asked of her about this event and others," said Graham, R-S.C.

The subtle shift in GOP tenor on Rice could be the result of internal grumblings on how far to take party opposition. Democrats picked up extra Senate seats in the election to maintain their narrow majority, making it that much harder for the remaining 45 Republicans to block the president's nominees.

One senior GOP Senate aide said Sunday that Republicans hadn't united against Rice and were not convinced she was worth going after. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the aide was not authorized to speak publicly on internal GOP deliberations.

"Be Still This Season..."~ A Guest Post by JES | Deep Roots at Home

?To every thing there is a season,

and a time to every purpose under the heaven??

After all the hard work in the previous months of sowing and reaping, it is no wonder God created winter. Like the seventh day is given as a day of rest, one may consider this snow-filled season as a sign to move indoors and give your family its much needed repose.

Sadly, it is so easy to get caught up in all the ?so called deals? and marketing strategies that the media has designed to keep us out of our peaceful parlors and into the mall parking lots. There is a mad rush in the streets when there should be a cozy calm.

Your presence at home is the best blessing you can offer your family.?Keep these months sacred and special by spending time inside your God given sphere. Light your scented candles, prepare your baked goods, fire up the tea kettle and grab a stack of inspiring books and board games. Meet your loved ones in the family room. Choose to?really?live this season out by spending your precious time at home. Life is short. Every day a beloved soul is nearing their last breath. Slow down and show them they are important through your family fellowship.

God does not want us running around town and exhausting ourselves like half crazed ?Martha?s?. The best gift you can give your family is?you?and?your undivided attention. Don?t allow yourself to be caught up in this overwhelming, commercially-created, chaotic, and frenzied rush for our instructions are clear?

?Be still, and know that I am God:

I will be exalted among the heathen,

I will be exalted in the earth.?

'Huddle' gene link to infertility

Scientists have identified a gene which they claim could help solve the problem of infertility in humans.

Edinburgh University conducted a study with fruit flies, during which they found when the gene SRPK is missing, chromosomes do not "huddle" together.

They believe the huddling process is necessary to ensure the egg's healthy development and fertilisation.

Chromosomes contain DNA and when they divide it can lead to sterility and low fertility, according to the study.

Previous research in mice has shown that the huddling process is essential in order for eggs to remain fertile, the scientists said.

By identifying the genes involved in the process, the experts now hope to gain an understanding of what goes on in the creation of fertile reproductive cells.

The team said further research is needed to help build a more detailed picture on how huddling works.

Professor Hiroyuki Ohkura, from the University of Edinburgh's school of biological sciences, said: "Fruit fly eggs serve as a good model to understand why sterility and low fertility arises in humans.

"By studying the phenomenon of chromosome clustering, shared by fruit flies and humans and identifying genes like SRPK we are gaining insights into fertility health."

The study is published in the Journal of Cell Science and was funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Wireless networks: Mobile devices keep track

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? A more sensitive technique for determining user position could lead to improved location-based mobile services.

Many mobile-phone applications (apps) use spatial positioning technology to present their user with location-specific information such as directions to nearby amenities. By simultaneously predicting the location of the mobile-user and the data access points, or hotspots, improved accuracy of positioning is now available, thanks to an international research team including Sinno Jialin Pan from the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research1. Software developers expect that such improvements will enable a whole new class of apps that can react to small changes in position.

Traditionally, device position was determined by the Global Positioning System (GPS) that uses satellites to triangulate approximate location, but its accuracy falters when the mobile device is indoors. An alternative approach is to use the 'received signal strength' (RSS) from local transmitters. Attenuation of radio waves by walls can limit accuracy; and, it is difficult to predict signals in complex, obstacle-filled environments.

Software developers have tried to circumvent these problems by using so-called 'learning-based techniques' that identify correlations between RSS values and access-point placement. Such systems do not necessarily require prior knowledge of the hotspot locations; rather they 'learn' from data collected on a mobile device. This also has drawbacks: the amount of data can be large, making calibration time consuming. Changes in the environment can also outdate the calibration.

Pan and his co-workers reduced this calibration effort in an experimental demonstration of a protocol that calculates both the positions of the device and the access points simultaneously -- a process they call colocalization. "Integrating the two location-estimation tasks into a unified mathematical model means that we can fully exploit the correlations between mobile-device and hotspot position," explains Pan.

First, the researchers trained a learning-based system with the signal-strength values received from access points at selected places in the area of interest. They used this information to calibrate a probabilistic 'location-estimation' system. Then, they approximated the location from the learned model using signal strength samples received in real-time from the access points.

Experimental trials showed that this approach not only required less calibration, but it was more accurate than other state-of-the-art systems. "We next want to apply the method to a larger-scale environment," says Pan. "We also want to find ways to make use of the estimated locations to provide more useful information, such as location-based advertising." As this technique could help robots navigate by themselves, it may also have important implications for the burgeoning field of robotics.

Lawsuit against Madonna dismissed in Russia

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? A Russian court on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit that sought millions of dollars in damages from Madonna for allegedly traumatizing minors by speaking up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg.

The ruling came after a one-day hearing that bordered on the farcical. During it, plaintiffs claimed that Madonna's so-called "propaganda of perversion" would negatively affect Russia's birthrate and erode the nation's defense capability by depriving the country of future soldiers. At one point, the judge threatened to expel journalists from the courtroom if they laughed too much.

In the end, the Moskovsky district court in St. Petersburg threw out the Trade Union of Russian Citizens' lawsuit and the 333 million rubles ($10.7 million) it sought from the singer for allegedly exposing youths to "homosexual propaganda."

Madonna did not attend the trial, and her publicist Liz Rosenberg said Thursday the star wouldn't comment about it.

Anti-gay sentiment is strong in Russia, particularly in St. Petersburg, where local legislators passed a law in February that made it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors. Six months later, Madonna criticized the law on Facebook, then stood up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg that drew fans as young as 12.

"Who will children grow up to be if they hear about the equal rights of the lesbian lobby and manly love with traditional sexual relations?" one of the plaintiffs, Darya Dedova, testified Thursday. "The death rate prevails over the birth rate in the West; young guys are becoming gender neutral."

The plaintiffs submitted evidence about gay culture drawn from Wikipedia pages, claiming that a real encyclopedia could not have articles about homosexuality.

"We aren't against homosexual people, but we are against the propaganda of perversion among minors," Dedova told the court. "We want to defend the values of a traditional family, which are currently in crisis in this country. Madonna violated our laws and she should be punished."

Madonna, who performed in Moscow and St. Petersburg in August as part of her world tour, also angered Russian officials by supporting jailed members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot. The American said during her Moscow concert that she would "pray for them," then turned around so the audience could see the words "Pussy Riot" written on her back. The singer also donned a ski mask similar to those worn by Pussy Riot.

Despite international outrage, three of that band's members were sentenced to two years in jail on hooliganism charges for performing a "punk prayer" at Moscow's main cathedral, during which they pleaded with the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from President Vladimir Putin. One of the Pussy Riot members was later released from jail on appeal, but the other two were sent to prison camps to serve their sentences.

3D-printed magic lens unscrambles hidden animations

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

A magic lens can now be used to turn a picture of a landscape into a portrait of President Obama or to watch a crawling worm emerge from a random pattern. Developed by Wojciech Jarosz from Disney Research, Zurich and colleagues, the new system uses a 3D printer to shape a block of clear plastic, creating a lens that can unscramble hidden images or animations.

The technique can produce a generic lens that decodes a range of scrambled images warped using a given set of rules. But it can also create a bespoke unscrambling lens that transforms one picture into another by providing an algorithm with the two images. "The source image can be anything at all," says Jarosz. "As long as it has all the necessary colours or shades of grey that are present in the hidden image."

As seen in the video, the lens is made up of lots of smooth facets with different orientations. Its surface is designed using a computer programme that comes up with the best possible shape based on caustics and the type of decoding required. Since a lens uncovers secret images by exploiting refraction, a facet isn't necessarily uncovering the portion of the image directly underneath.

Jarosz came up with the idea thanks to inspiration from a previous project where an engraved panel was designed to cast images on walls. "I realised that we could try the same idea but in reverse to get another interesting effect," says Jarosz.

The team is now looking at how they can improve image quality by manufacturing lenses using a professional process. The technique could provide a new way of engaging children in museums, or to pass secret messages between cellphones that can only be decoded by viewing the screen through a magic lens. "They could even some day be used as a security measure in bank notes," says Jarosz.

The research will be presented later this month at Siggraph Asia, a leading conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques in Singapore, Malaysia.

If you enjoyed this post, see how you can decode invisible images in signs by waving your hand or watch a handheld camera see through objects.

20 Guests, 19 Pies

Pie! The Plotz family's wonderful and absurd Thanksgiving pie tradition

Photograph by Paul Plotz

Last November, Slate Editor David Plotz shared the story of how his mother came to bake 19 pies for 20 guests ... every Thanksgiving. The original piece is reprinted below.

?When he began to eat pie, he wished he had eaten nothing else. He ate a piece of pumpkin pie and a piece of custard pie, and he ate almost a piece of vinegar pie. He tried a piece of mince pie, but could not finish it. He just couldn?t do it. There were berry pies and cream pies and vinegar pies and raisin pies, but he could not eat any more.?

From Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder

At 5:15 p.m., after the turkey and trimmings, after the traditional neighborhood walk, after a few stolen moments of football watching, after the first round of washing dishes, we line up in the study. At first, it is an orderly line, children and older guests at the front, family in the back.

The pies cover the entire desk, and spill over onto a bookshelf. Several are held in reserve?just in case. (In case of what, no one knows.) In recent years, they have been labeled carefully by the grandkids. The traditional pies are there, of course: a pumpkin, a pecan, several kinds of apple. The line jostles toward the cluster of creamy pies: lemon meringue, lemon cream, grasshopper, and, of course, mocha chocolate crunch (about which more below). In the far corner are the pies that only my father eats: mince, minty sly, ecclefechan tart, and funeral. The two flat golden pies, derby and frangipane, are impossible to tell apart. Hardest to reach, in the center of the table, are the experimental pies: pomegranate, coffee maple-walnut, and crab-apple pie with cider vinegar.

Nineteen pies in all, for a Thanksgiving party of 20.

The first cut is made, usually my mother dishing mocha chocolate crunch for a grandchild. And then, chaos. The line dissolves. It?s every piehole for himself, until, 45 minutes later, we all collapse, insentient, on the floor of the living room.

My mother, a retired English professor, is a doting grandmother, a brilliant scholar, and a great wit. She is thrifty in her tastes?I can?t remember the last thing she bought for herself?and small of appetite. But in this one way she is extravagance itself. Her Thanksgiving pie spectacle?enough pie to feed 80 or 100 guests?is excessive, bizarre, and sometimes even grotesque.

Yet it has also become the only holiday tradition that anyone in our family cares about. My children look forward to pie for weeks. We have friends who once rejiggered their holiday plans just to drop by for Thanksgiving dessert. My own favorite few minutes of the year are the ones just before the slicing begins, when I reconnoiter the pie room, and plan my assault. Apricot this year? Or the new apple crumb pie? A huge slice of cherry or just a sliver?
