MACKAY police are warning social media users to think twice before posting happy snaps on Facebook.
Crime Prevention Unit Sergeant Nigel Dalton said posting holiday pictures could be a key indicator to burglars that a home was vacant and ripe for the picking.
Sgt Dalton said people often forgot that Facebook wasn't private when posting pictures of their European adventure or Fijian escape.
"Whether you're on holidays or at a restaurant to see a friend, unless you've got your privacy settings really high a lot of people are going to see you're away from the house," he said.
"We do it out of boasting that we're in another city, or doing something special that makes someone envious.
"There is the potential for someone getting your address from Facebook or using other online searches to see where you live."
Sgt Dalton urged Facebook users to increase security settings and only allow close friends to see posts, pictures or status updates.
"You can choose to allow only your friends, or friends of friends to see some things, and your friends might have another 200 friends that you don't know, looking for a soft target."
He encouraged parents to talk with their kids about what not to post on Facebook, especially before going on a holiday.
"Teens are probably more likely to let friends know you're away," he said.
"Let them know about the need for security."
Sgt Dalton said posting pictures of valuable items was a bad idea.
"It's not a good idea to say 'here's my $40,000 engagement ring' on Facebook," he said.
