Dutch state in compensation talks over massacre (AP)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? The Dutch government says it is in talks over compensating relatives of men summarily executed by Dutch forces in a notorious 1947 massacre during Indonesia's battle for independence from colonial rule.

A Dutch court ruled in September that the Dutch state was responsible for the massacre in the village of Rawagedeh on Java island in which up to 430 men were rounded up and shot.

The Dutch government said in a statement Wednesday it has held preliminary talks with the relatives' lawyer "about the possibility of reaching a settlement."

The lawyer who represented the relatives in their legal battle, Liesbeth Zegveld, could not immediately be reached for comment.
