Early morning fire kills two family pets

GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. (KKCO)--An early morning fire kills family pets, and shakes an Orchard Mesa neighborhood.

A fire started outside a house on Glory View Drive, just south of B Road.

Shortly after 7 :00 AM, nearly 20 firefighters responded to the scene with 7 trucks. They quickly put out the fire which started outside the home.

Propane tanks along the house exploded, causing the loud noise that woke the neighborhood.

Both residents inside the house were able to make it out safely. Unfortunately, two small dogs were killed in the fire. Another dog was injured, but fire fighters were able to perform CPR and save it. A bird was also killed, and three cats fled the home.

The fire department says smoke detectors in side the house alerted the residents to the fire.

The cause of the fire is still unknown - but there's significant damage to the home and the residents can't say there.

The Red Cross has been called to help.
