Without a working website, social media marketing is a wasted effort, warned internet expert Gihan Perera.

Mr Perera, CEO of First Step Communications, which provides internet marketing systems for small businesses, said while social media offered advisers outstanding opportunities to build brand, demonstrate thought leadership and attract new business, all this activity would be wasted if they did not have their own website.
?People try to jump straight into social media, because it?s fun and sexy and the flavour of the moment,? said Mr Perera. ?But if you don?t have a website and an associated blog and client newsletters that feed into your website, then much of your social media activity will be wasted.?
Speaking at the 2012 Synchron NextGen Conference, held in Cairns last week, Mr Perera said creating an efficient and effective website did not have to be an expensive, complicated exercise.
?For about $8 per month you can have a very professional looking website at a very affordable price.? And the solutions are designed so that you can upgrade to a more sophisticated website if you want to further down the track,? he said.
To demonstrate his point during the conference, Mr Perera helped one Synchron NextGen adviser create a website from scratch in only an hour.
The NextGen Conference, now in its seventh year, has been designed specifically for financial services professionals under the age of 40.? Synchron Director, Don Trapnell, said this year?s event focused exclusively on how to use technology to double business.
?The NextGen Conference aims to provide pragmatic, hands-on training which is really relevant and usable for young financial services professionals be they advisers, sales executives or students,? Mr Trapnell said. ?As well as learning how to create websites, delegates also learned how to market online, how to build a personal brand, how to run online seminars and webinars and how to build their online community.?
